Summer in Spring, TX brings loads of fun. However, it can also bring dangers, like wasps. And if your kids don’t know what these pests look like or what to do (and what NOT to do) when they inevitably show up, it can lead to painful stings and lots of tears. That’s why we’re here to help!
While we offer wasp control in Spring, TX, we want to go further by giving you the information you need to teach your kids about these stinging insects. For starters, it’s important to warn your children about the dangers of disturbing a nest.
While not every bee or wasp-like insect is aggressive, swatting at them, throwing objects at them, poking holes, or chasing wasps is a great way to get stung—a lot.
Reduce Food and Drink Attractions Around Play Areas
During the height of summer, wasps and other stinging insects are attracted to sweet, sugary food items and drinks. Therefore, always keep drinks covered. If your kids are prone to spills (and hey, whose kids aren’t?), sippy cups or other lidded drink containers are ideal. Be sure to also wipe up spills right away, promptly clean up food after outdoor meals, and check any cups or cans before drinking them (in case there’s a wasp in one).
Reducing food and drink around play areas is especially important for helping keep wasps away from your kids. Don’t leave sticky food waste around play areas. However, as an extra precaution, encourage your kids to always wear shoes outdoors to reduce surprise encounters.
Give Nests Space and Have an Allergy Plan
As we mentioned, not all wasps or wasp-like insects are aggressive, but getting too close to them can make them defensive. If your child has a serious sting allergy, do not attempt to remove an active nest near their play areas on your own. This can put both you and your child at risk, and it’s simply not worth it.
Instead, keep children away from those areas until a professional wasp control team can help remove it with the proper protective gear. In the meantime, follow the clinician-provided emergency plan in case of a stinging event and keep your child’s prescribed medication somewhere that’s easily accessible.
