What Do Fleas Look Like? Identification Guide for Homeowners

If you have outdoor pets or you let your pets run around in your backyard or local park, it's almost guaranteed that at some point they'll end up with fleas. But how can you tell if your furry friend has a flea problem? There are a few characteristics and signs that give these pests away.

Flea Identification

Fleas are small, flat, parasitic insects found usually on animals or near animal resting areas. Flea eggs and larvae are very small and can be hard to spot on their own. Adult fleas, however, can be seen with the naked eye. Though there are nearly 300 species of flea found in the United States, the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the most common flea you’ll see on your pets and in your home.

If you suspect your pet has fleas (maybe they are itching more than usual or exhibiting signs of distress), check their fur for fleas. Look for insects that are:

  • Flat and less than 1/8inch long
  • Dark brown, black, or deep red
  • Wingless, with large hind legs

In addition to your pet, check their bedding, usual resting areas, and any clothing they wear, including collars. While fleas themselves may not be found in these areas (fleas prefer to stay on or close to their host at all times), dried blood and flea droppings (sometimes called "flea dirt") get left behind in places fleas frequent. Look for small, dark, pepper-like or coffee-ground-like debris.

If you know your pet has a pest but can't quite tell what it is (maybe it's rounder or darker than a flea), it could be ticks. Ticks and fleas inhabit similar areas in nature, and when compared side by side, they look very similar. Check out our blog on Common Types of Ticks on Dogs for more information.

Pests without Pets?

Did you know you can have a flea problem in your home even if you don’t have any pets…as if fleas weren’t gross enough! If you have wildlife that comes in or hangs around your home, including rodent infestations in your attic, you're at risk of having fleas invade your home. Thankfully, without any pets in the home, fleas won’t get far if they get inside. But don’t be fooled – fleas can and will bite people if the opportunity presents itself.
