Do More Mosquitoes in Your Backyard Mean More Bites?

Your backyard in Northeast Florida could be providing more of a mosquito habitat than you imagine.

According to new research at the University of Florida, the number of mosquitoes hanging around your property might not provide the full picture about how frequently you’re being bitten. Earlier this month, UF/IFAS shared their findings from a study that examined mosquitoes versus human biting activity in residential yards in Indian River County, FL.

Some of their more interesting discoveries were about where mosquitoes are found, which species are present, and how those two things compared with the number of bites people actually experienced.

What Exactly Did This Research Discover?

Armed with mosquito traps and a smartphone-based bite diary, researchers studied mosquito populations and residents’ experiences with mosquito bites in their yards. One unexpected discovery involved Aedes aegypti, the mosquito known for transmitting dengue.

Not only that, but researchers expected to find a larger presence of the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in their chosen suburban environment – but instead the Aedes aegypti relatively common.

And another surprise was that the number of mosquitoes collected in residential traps didn’t necessarily correspond with the number of bites reported by residents. People who spent more time outdoors during evening hours reported more bites, which means that mosquito exposure involves more than just counting insects.

What we’re saying is: Your outdoor habitat matters, too.

Where Are Mosquitoes Breeding Around Your Florida Home?

Some mosquitoes require only an extremely small amount of standing water for breeding, while others use larger bodies of water or natural habitats. And around Northeast Florida homes, potential breeding sites are plentiful. They include…

  • Rainwater collected in containers, like unused flower pots, plant saucers, and more
  • Water trapped beneath tarps and outdoor furniture covers
  • Children’s toys left outside during rain
  • Clogged gutters and drainage areas
  • Larger containers, like buckets, wheelbarrows, and lawn equipment
  • Water-holding cavities in trees
  • Around faulty outdoor spigots and in leaky irrigation areas

Jacksonville’s outdoor environment with ample rainfall, warmth, and humidity can create lots of opportunities for mosquito development. And let’s not forget the areas that support adult mosquitoes’ survival. Dense shrubbery, shaded areas in landscaping, and other protected vegetation might offer shelter during the day.

Does Fewer Mosquitoes Mean Fewer Mosquito Bites?

Not necessarily, as The University of Florida research demonstrates. There are variables in activity and feeding behaviors, including the mosquito species. Some more frequently bite from dusk to dawn, while others bite during the day. Your exposure can also depend on where and when you spend time outdoors.

At Mosquito Squad Plus of Northeast Florida, we know that mosquito prevention involves more than simply locating obvious swarms. For Jacksonville-area residents, routinely eliminating stagnant water is an excellent starting point – and professional mosquito control from Mosquito Squad Plus can augment those efforts by also targeting adult mosquito resting areas.

This new research reinforces something worth noting: Mosquito problems aren’t just relegated to seeing swarms of mosquitoes around your yard.
