Surveillance reporting shows that mosquito season in Florida isn’t one monolithic problem that involves one mosquito or one mosquito-borne illness.

Florida’s mosquito season doesn’t come from just one source. The state’s arbovirus surveillance report from August 9–15, 2026 shows that several different mosquito-borne viruses are circulating at once. In just that one week, the state health department logged locally acquired dengue, positive West Nile virus samples, and Eastern equine encephalitis in horses, along with mosquito-borne illness advisories in Alachua, Leon, Palm Beach, and Pasco counties and alerts in Hillsborough, Miami-Dade, and Pinellas.

The second group is Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito. This is the species behind dengue, and the vector for chikungunya as well. Aedes aegypti is a daytime biter that breeds in surprisingly small amounts of water, often right around the home, in plant saucers, bottle caps, tarps, and clogged gutters. This species is why Florida is seeing locally acquired dengue again. The report documented 16 new local dengue cases in a single week and 23 so far in 2026, mostly in Hillsborough County. By contrast, this year's chikungunya cases have all traced back to travel rather than local mosquitoes, which is further evidence that the species changes the risk profile for those unlucky enough to find themselves bitten by mosquitoes in Florida.
