What a Potentially Historic El Niño Could Mean for Rockford Homeowners and Pest Activity

Could El Niño bring milder temperatures and more pests this season? Rockford IL pest control will help fight back

As we head into autumn and the winter beyond, looking back at the wonderful summer we enjoyed should bring a smile to our faces. Summer can feel brief, especially in our region where winter can drag on, but this winter could be different due to the El Niño conditions the globe will experience this year. Forecasts can struggle in times like this, with an unprecedented warm spot hovering in the Pacific Ocean disrupting the global climate, but there are some models that predict a warmer winter this season, potentially saving us from the frigid air that prolongs this season. So, what are the implications of a warmer winter this year? They are far-reaching and could mean you can head outside more often without feeling bombarded by cold wind and snow, allowing you to spend time in the yard that you normally couldn't! There are downsides to this prediction, too, however. There could be less moisture in our region as a result, which could make drought conditions more likely, and there are also the pests to contend with. You’re probably wondering how pests could be an issue during the winter, and this is a good question. In all likelihood, the winter months will still be adequately cold to force pests away for the season, but it could mean the winter is shorter, allowing pests to remain active on both sides of the winter season.

For your outdoor lifestyle and health, more pest activity over the year’s course is not a good thing, especially for pests like ticks and mosquitoes. These pests are notorious for their constant parasitic behavior, and ticks present a real threat to your health. Ticks are known for their ability to carry Lyme disease, an illness that has spread across the US like wildfire, infecting an estimated 475,000+ individuals every year. While it is very much treatable with antibiotics, the disease can be tough to recognize in the first place, often resembling the common cold, and chronic cases can seriously damage your health. The effects of a chronic infection can mean significant lethargy, brain fog, and organ inflammation, including in the heart and other vital organs. With this threat in mind, it’s important to consider how a warm winter could allow these parasites to thrive for longer and how professional Rockford pest control will help fight back.
