Keep Mosquitoes Away From Summer Parties

How to Keep Mosquitoes Away From Your Yard During Summer Parties in Canterbury

You’ve planned the menu and set up the tables, and the yard looks amazing. But you’re afraid that as soon as the sun slips below the horizon, the mosquitoes will come out. And then people will start swatting instead of talking. Welts don't make great party favors.

That’s a Canterbury summer party without mosquito control. And given this town’s location in eastern Connecticut, the mosquito pressure at dusk can be outright aggressive.

Canterbury is rural, tucked away in the woods, and close to water. That means the mosquitoes showing up at your party aren't just coming from your yard. They’re migrating from all the natural breeding areas around here that produce mosquitoes at scale.

Here’s how you can keep your gathering comfortable, starting well before the guests arrive.

Schedule Treatment Before the Event

The most effective thing you can do is schedule professional Canterbury mosquito control at least 48 hours before your party. The treatment needs time to establish a barrier in the vegetation where mosquitoes rest. Once set, it can reduce the populations by up to 90% for up to 21 days.

If you host outdoor gatherings regularly from May to October, you’d likely benefit from a recurring treatment plan. Mosquito control works best with regular treatment because it means the pests never have a chance to regroup. And you never have to scramble to prep in advance of a big event.

But even having said that, if it’s a one-time event like a graduation, reunion, or birthday, you can always have a special event spray done with Mosquito Squad of Middlesex, New London & Windham County. These are designed for exactly that situation.

Do Your Own Prep the Day Before & Day Of

Walk the area where guests will gather and deal with standing water first. Every plant saucer, bucket, half-folded tarp, and low spot holding water is a breeding site. Dump it, drain it, or flip it over. This won't eliminate the mosquitoes already in your yard, but it helps stop your own property from producing more.

It’s also a good idea to mow the lawn and trim vegetation near the seating and food area. Mosquitoes rest in tall grass and dense shrubs during the day and come out at dusk, which unfortunately happen to be the best hours for summer parties.

On the day of the party, where you place things matters. Keep food tables and seating away from dense vegetation, wooded edges, and standing water sources. The closer your gathering is to mosquito habitat, the more mosquitoes you'll see.

Fans help. Mosquitoes are weak fliers, and a couple of box fans or oscillating fans near the seating area create enough airflow to keep them from landing comfortably. It’s low-tech, it works, and as a bonus, it helps regulate temperature as well.

You may be tempted to try citronella candles and Tiki torches as well. They are better than nothing, but their effective range is measured in inches, not yards. A few candles on the table won’t help with a serious mosquito problem. Likewise, personal repellent sprays work well for individuals, but they’re not as effective as treating the yard itself.
