Just because you don’t have obvious chigger bites doesn’t mean your yard is chigger-free. Could chiggers be bothering your kids and pets in the yard?

Chiggers are awfully tiny pets to cause such big feelings. Their bites are far itchier and irritating than they are visible. That’s what’s so annoying about them – you’ll probably not see them before they cause someone (or something) to start scratching.

Sometimes, the way our kids and pets behave is the first sign of chiggers. Here’s what to look out for.

Trouble After Visiting Certain Spots of Your Yard

Do your kids have a favorite space in your yard in which they love to romp and be on the ground? Do your pets start exploring along tall grasses, shrubs, or wooded spaces that back up to your yard? Take note of where your little ones play outdoors and notice their behaviors after visiting them.

If there’s scratching and/or a noticeable cluster of small, red bumps, you might at first think it’s a grass allergy – but it could be chiggers.

Take note if your pets discontinue their visits to certain areas of your yard, as well. If they’re not keeping their regular outdoor routine, something has interrupted it. It might be chiggers or other pests. And remember if your pet is itching, sometimes they soothe themselves by licking or biting their paws, not actually scratching.

Where to Check for Chigger Bites

It’s never a bad idea, especially this time of year, to check your kids and your pets after returning from outdoor fun. Fleas, ticks, chiggers, and other pests are out for blood. Kids and pets are likely hosts, because they are closer to the ground and perhaps explore spaces that we do not when spending time in the yard.

Look for bites and ticks on your kids when you come back inside, paying special attention around waistbands, along sock lines, behind the knees, in their hair, and along their groin.

On your pets, take a look beneath their fur for any signs of irritation, paying special attention around their ears, noses, and bellies.
