What Happens When a Flea Bites a Human?

Fleas are best known for bothering our cats and dogs, but do they bite humans?
Flea populations in Northeast Florida remain active throughout most of the year, and these tiny terrors can become a real problem in our lawn, pet areas, and other outdoor spaces.
And while we most often associate flea bites with our pets, fleas certainly do bite humans. What happens when a flea bites us? Should we be concerned?
How Do Fleas Bite Humans?
Adult fleas, like ticks and mosquitoes, feed on blood. In order to obtain blood from a human, a flea will pierce the skin and administer its own saliva. Many times, the human body will react to flea saliva with inflammation and itching.
Fleas are carried into our backyards by wild animals and pets. They typically prefer animal hosts, but if a flea happens to land on human skin, it will bite. The most common areas for fleas to bite us are:
- On our feet, ankles, and lower legs
- Along our waistband or other areas where clothing fits close to the skin
The good news about fleas – if there can be any – is that unlike ticks, they do not remain attached to our skin. They feed briefly and move on.
What Does a Flea Bite Look and Feel Like?
The typical first sign of a flea bite is a small, very itchy bump at the bite site. Flea bites can appear in groups or clusters, and it’s not uncommon for a reddish spot or halo to occur around each bite.
Your reaction will depend greatly on your specific sensitivity to flea saliva. While one person might experience mild irritation after a flea bite, another might develop more noticeable swelling or more persistent itchiness.
Most of the time, a flea bite is more uncomfortable than dangerous, with the biggest everyday concern being the negative effects of repeated scratching. Broken skin from excessive scratching is vulnerable to a secondary skin infection.
What To Do After a Flea Bite
Due to the potential for secondary skin infection, it’s important to care for a flea bite early by first washing it thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Applying a cold compress or an over-the-counter antihistamine can help reduce itching and swelling.
If you notice any other following, contact a healthcare provider:
- Increasing pain, redness, warmth, or swelling
- Pus or drainage from the bite site
- Widespread or severe rash
- Fever, headache, chills, or body aches
- Other symptoms associated with a severe allergic reaction
Although uncommon, fleas carry and can transmit disease-causing germs.
