Is West Nile Virus in Florida This Year?

While WNV is in Florida in 2026, current reports are not indicative of widespread human illness.

According to a recently published arborvirus surveillance report by the Florida Department of Health, the state has recorded only one symptomatic human case, which was acquired in the state. The report also details one asymptomatic blood donor in Leon County, which tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Several Florida counties have sentinel chickens in which West Nile virus antibodies have been identified. These findings are important, in that they aid health agencies in identifying where the virus might be circulating before additional human cases occur.

Has West Nile Virus Reached Northeast Florida This Year?

As of the time of this writing, though the confirmed symptomatic case of WNV is in Alachua County, no human cases have been reported in Duval, St. Johns, Nassau, Clay, or Baker Counties.

The Florida Department of Health notes that the months of July, August, and September as the peak period for West Nile virus transmission in our state. So, while having no Northeast Florida cases reported so far this year is reassuring, we must remember that mosquito-borne illness activity can change as we move through the season. Continued awareness is paramount, as our climate supports an extended mosquito season as compared to other parts of the country.

Northeast Florida Residents Should Reduce Their Mosquito Exposure

Preventing mosquito bites is the single best way to avoid illnesses, like West Nile virus, for which there remains no licensed human vaccine. Northeast Florida residents and vacationers can take an array of simple precautionary measures to limit their exposure to a potentially infected mosquito.

Wear long sleeves, long pants, and loose, natural fabrics that mosquitoes cannot bite through
Eliminate sources of standing water, such as water collected in outdoor toys, buckets, flowerpots and saucers, and drainage or irrigation areas
Use extra caution from dusk to dawn, as West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes are typically active during these hours
Perform regular outdoor maintenance, such as cleaning gutters and lawn debris
Refresh birdbath water or pet bowl water every couple of days
