Why You Have More Mosquitoes Than Your Neighbors in Winter, WI
You’re sitting on your deck in Winter, Wisconsin, and a swarm of mosquitoes is dead-set on eating you alive. You can see your neighbor across the street enjoying their yard without a care in the world.
That’s not fair! And on some level, yes, it is bad luck. But there are also reasons you might be seeing more mosquitoes than your neighbors. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to reduce the problem.
You Might Have More Standing Water
You might have a slight clog in your gutters that you can’t see. Even an inch of standing water can give mosquitoes a place to breed. Or your yard might have some drainage problems due to low spots that pool after every rain. Or you might have a tarp over firewood or a grill that’s holding water that you might have forgotten about.
Mosquitoes do not need a lot of standing water to breed. Even a bottle cap of water is enough for some species of mosquitoes to kickstart the next generation. The difference between a yard with a dozen small standing water sources and a yard with one or two is enormous. Walk your property and deal with everything: gutters, birdbaths, forgotten buckets, boat covers, tire swings, kids' toys. If you want more guidance on how to do this, check out this video we have on the subject: the 7 T's of mosquito control.
Your Vegetation Is a Better Mosquito Habitat
Mosquitoes don't spend all their time flying around looking for you. During the day, they rest in shaded, humid vegetation. On your property, that might look like dense lakeside brush, unmowed edges, overgrown hedges, or thick groundcover. The more of this you have near your deck and outdoor living areas, the more mosquitoes you'll see at dusk when they emerge to feed.
Mowing, trimming, and thinning vegetation near your outdoor spaces won't eliminate mosquitoes. But you can at least cut down on the ones that congregate where you like to spend your free time.
Lake-Adjacent Properties Have a Microclimate Problem
If your property is closer to the lake, more shaded, or sits in a lower spot than your neighbor's, you may have a microclimate that's more favorable to mosquitoes. The more shade and moisture you have on your property, the more likely this is to be the case.
This is a little tricky because you can’t exactly move the lake. But you can manage the shade and moisture around your outdoor spaces to make the microclimate less favorable to bloodthirsty mosquitoes.
What You Can Do About Winter, WI Mosquito Control
The first and best thing you can do is to get rid of sources of standing water on your property. Then after that, trim vegetation and mow the grass. But once you do that, if you still have a mosquito problem, it might make sense to bring in the pros.
