What's Causing an Increase in Ticks This Year?

A milder winter, followed by a warm summer, is fueling tick population growth in our region. Fight back with professional Verona, NJ tick control for best results

Have you been reading about ticks in the news recently? The Northeast is abuzz with the constant coverage surrounding the massive population booms that ticks are experiencing in our region. While the news tends to shift focus consistently, as well as sensationalize insect stories at times, ticks are a very real threat in our region. These tiny arachnids, which date back around 100 million years to their origin, have been a constant thorn in the back of animals across the world, and they are as bad as ever today. Thanks to milder winters, hot summers, and rising populations of mice and deer (the preferred targets for ticks), these tiny parasites are becoming a constant issue in our region, and our health is at risk as a result. Indeed, ticks are the source of various health conditions across the country, including Lyme disease, Alpha-gal syndrome, and many others. While we don’t often think of tiny pests being threats to our health, ticks certainly are due to their feeding behavior, which will involve latching onto and feeding on the blood of different animal hosts across their lifetimes. As you can imagine, this is an incredibly unsanitary feeding practice, and it has led to the spread of Lyme disease from deer, birds, and mice to the ticks that feed on them. These diseases are then transmitted to humans once ticks latch onto us, leaving us to deal with the potentially serious health consequences.

If you’ve been bitten by a tick, there are some things to help figure out if you’ve contracted a disease. Firstly, if you find a tick attached to you, make sure to remove it with fine tweezers, firmly gripping it as close to the skin as possible and gently pulling straight up to ensure the tick’s head doesn’t detach. Keep the tick in a plastic baggy, and you can send it off to be tested for diseases that could have been transmitted to you. As far as symptoms of Lyme disease to look out for, keep an eye out for a bullseye-shaped rash around a bite area - this is a near-certain indicator of Lyme disease. Also, make sure to see a doctor if you feel unusually, chronically lethargic, have flu-like symptoms, and have any brain fog. These are all Lyme disease indicators that could make a trip to the doctor a good idea.
