Keep Mosquitoes Away From Summer Parties

How to Keep Mosquitoes Away From Your Yard During Summer Parties in Burlington

You've planned the menu and set up the tables, and the yard looks amazing. But you're worried that as soon as the sun drops, the mosquitoes will show up. And then instead of chattering, you hear buzzing. The swatting, soon to follow.

That's a Burlington summer party without mosquito control. And given this town's location along the Delaware River on flat South Jersey terrain, the mosquitoes at dusk can be outright aggressive. The river and surrounding low-lying areas produce mosquitoes from natural sources that far exceed what can breed on your own property alone.

So here’s how you can keep your gathering comfortable, starting well before the guests arrive.

Schedule Treatment Before the Event

The most effective thing you can do is schedule professional Burlington mosquito control at least 48 hours before your party. The treatment needs time to work. That’s because it’s applied to vegetation, and when mosquitoes rest, that’s when it starts to work. Once set, it’s very effective and can cut down the mosquito population by 90% for 21 days at a time.

If you host outdoor gatherings regularly through the season, you'd likely benefit from a recurring treatment plan. Mosquito control works best with regular treatment because it means the pests never have a chance to regroup. And you would also never have to scramble before a big event.

Even saying that, if you have a one-off event coming up like a graduation, reunion, or birthday, you can always have a special event spray done with Mosquito Squad of Moorestown-Mount Laurel. Because that’s exactly the situation these treatments are designed for.

Do Your Own Prep the Day Before & Day Of

Standing water is the #1 source of mosquito trouble. Because that’s where they breed. So walk the area where guests will gather and deal with that first. Every plant saucer, bucket, half-folded tarp, and low spot holding water is a breeding site. Dump it, drain it, or flip it over. This won’t get rid of the mosquitoes already in your yard, but it will help stop them from reproducing.

It's also a good idea to mow the lawn and trim vegetation near the seating and food area. Mosquitoes rest in tall grass and dense shrubs during the day and come out at dusk, which unfortunately happens to be the best hours for summer parties.

On the day of the party, where you place things is going to matter too. Keep food tables and seating away from dense vegetation, wooded edges, and standing water sources. The closer your gathering is to mosquito habitats, the more mosquitoes you’ll see.

Fans help. Mosquitoes are weak fliers, and a couple of box fans or oscillating fans near the seating area create enough airflow to keep them from landing comfortably. It's low-tech, it works, and as a bonus, it helps on the warmer evenings too.

You might be tempted to put up some citronella candles and Tiki torches too. But you can comfortably skip those. They’re better than nothing, to be sure, but you have to be within inches of them to be protected. A few candles on the table won’t repel mosquitoes as much as you’ll likely need.

Similarly, personal repellent sprays work well for individuals, but they're not as effective as treating the yard itself. Plus, dealing with bug spray is a hassle for the guests themselves, and it’s best to avoid putting them in that situation.
