Preparing for Summer Pest Surges in Kansas City, KS

Doesn’t it feel like pests come out overnight when warmer temperatures hit?

Well, you’re not imagining it. As it warms up in Kansas City this summer, all kinds of pests begin to build and multiply. Higher temperatures and humidity work together to accelerate breeding cycles for mosquitoes, ants, ticks, and other pests at the same time.

We know it’s overwhelming to think about all the pests ready to take over your yard. But just know, there are things you can do to prepare and take back control of your property.

Mosquitoes Take Over Quickly

Of all the summer pests in Kansas City, mosquitoes are among the fastest to swarm around your property. With plentiful access to standing water, they breed quickly.

Heavy rain, irrigation runoff, and poor yard drainage all create the temporary pools and saturated ground mosquitoes love. With one single rain along with increased heat, mosquitoes can go from eggs to adults in just a few days. This means you’ll have multiple generations of mosquitoes buzzing around your yard at once.

Get recurring mosquito control in place before peak season and keep those high mosquito numbers down. This way, you’ll be able to enjoy your outdoor spaces without all the buzzing and biting.

Fire Ants Pop Up Overnight

Fire ant hills quite literally pop up overnight. Being both industrious and aggressive, fire ants will stop at nothing to secure your property as their territory. They’ll build multiple hills across your lawn, along garden beds, and yard edges.

And as temperatures rise, they build hills faster and more efficiently. They don’t discriminate on who they bite either. They love to place their mounds in high-traffic areas (near play sets, walkways, and clear spots on the lawn) where kids and pets spend their summer days.

To reduce the number of fire ant bites, schedule professional fire ant control that addresses active colonies and helps reduce new fire ant hills throughout the season.

Ticks and Spiders Come Out Too

Summer pests aren’t limited to just flying and stinging. Both ticks and spiders come out to crawl, too.

Ticks are active when everyone loves to be outside (from spring through fall, with peak activity concentrated in June and July). Deer ticks and Lone Star ticks are present in the Kansas City area, and both carry diseases that can alter your life. Make sure to schedule recurring tick control through the active season to keep tick pressure down in your yard.

Brown recluse spiders also become more active as temperatures rise. They love dark, undisturbed areas (garages, sheds, storage spaces, and woodpiles) where they spin their webs and wait. Professional spider control targets these areas and perimeter zones so you have far fewer brown recluses on your property (or inside your home).

Wasps Build Colonies

Spring inspires wasp queens to start new colonies. Quietly, they build new colonies when you think it’s too early to check for them. Then, by midsummer, mature colonies are ready to take control of your property (and honestly, your schedule).

Wasp and yellowjacket populations peak in aggression by late summer, when colonies are largest, and food sources become more competitive. Nests built in eaves, soffits, sheds, and ground burrows become a swarming sting-fest by June. Then, by August, you’re more at risk for stings and in constant fear of going outside.

Early wasp control (before colonies reach full size) is far more effective than waiting until late summer when populations are ready to take over.
