Mosquito, Tick & Pest Control in Decatur, AL

Decatur sits beside some of the most carefully managed mosquito water in the South. TVA runs Wheeler Reservoir on a calendar that accounts for mosquito breeding along the shoreline, and the wildlife refuge on the river started as backwater TVA diked off and pumped dry for the same reason. None of that work crosses into your yard, and the mosquitoes biting on your patio in late September mostly hatched within a few steps of it.

Mosquito Squad of Huntsville - Northern Alabama has treated Decatur yards since 2018. We're a veteran-owned family business, and most of what we'd tell you as a new customer comes down to how the river's schedule differs from the one behind your house.

Why Decatur Pest Pressure Looks Different

The Tennessee River at Decatur is Wheeler Reservoir, and TVA treats mosquitoes as part of running it. In its 2004 reservoir operations decision, TVA committed to monitoring reservoir mosquito breeding habitat and to lengthening water-level fluctuations on Wheeler, along with three other mainstem lakes, if that habitat grew.

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, based right here in Decatur, came out of the same effort. When the refuge was established in 1938, TVA had already impounded shallow backwater and was pumping it dry through spring and summer to take away breeding habitat. The pumps still run. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says refuge impoundments are drawn down after the waterfowl leave in late winter and pumped again once the reservoir rises in mid-April, with TVA paying half the cost at both pump stations from May 1 to September 1.

So the big water around Decatur is engineered against mosquitoes, on a schedule, by two federal agencies. What that schedule leaves out is every gutter, drain, and soggy back corner in town, and nobody's pumping those.

The Calendar Splits After Labor Day

TVA starts lowering Wheeler toward winter pool after Labor Day weekend, and the cost-shared summer pumping on the refuge ends September 1. On the river side, the managed season's winding down.

A Decatur back yard doesn't follow that calendar. Our office notes on Decatur accounts include a homeowner who called near the end of October thinking the season was already over. Our office explained that we treat through the end of October, because mosquitoes tend to hang around until the first hard frost, and there's no contract holding anyone to the last visits. One Decatur account has barrier visits booked for October 8 and October 29 this year. A late-September call about bites got a complimentary return visit two days later. Decatur's first freeze usually lands around the end of October, so the last six weeks of the season matter more here than you'd probably plan for.

We covered how the species mix shifts late in the year in why Huntsville mosquitoes get worse in August.

Mosquito Barrier Treatment in Decatur

A Mosquito Barrier Treatment visit costs as little as $74 and repeats on a 21-day cycle. It's applied to the resting cover where mosquitoes wait out the heat: shaded foundation beds, shrub undersides, and the fence line.

The water side is what separates a Decatur yard from the reservoir. A technician's log from one Decatur property lists what got treated on a single October visit: downspouts, drains, kids' toys, a birdbath, a low spot along the back fence, and both sides of the rear fence line. None of those sources sits on the lake, and they aren't on anybody's water-level schedule. We check that kind of inventory against our 7 T's of Mosquito Control before spraying.

Keep your kids and pets inside during the application and until it dries; that takes 30 to 45 minutes. It'll keep working for 2 to 3 weeks depending on rain, irrigation, and sun.

If you're getting bitten between visits, call and we'll book a return. In June, one Decatur homeowner told us about ten mosquitoes landed on him while he stood in the back yard, and he had a retreatment on the calendar within three days.

Natural Treatment Option

The natural treatment option is built on essential oils and kills mosquitoes and ticks the moment it lands on them. It doesn't last as long as our traditional formula, so if you're on it, you'll see visits come closer together. If you switch partway through a season, the office moves you over and schedules the next visit within about a week.

Tick Control in Decatur

Tick treatment should start in late March or early April and run into October. Ticks wait where your mower stops: the back fence, a brush pile, the leaf litter along a wooded edge. Our tick control work targets that strip and follows the 6 C's of Tick Control.

Fire Ant Control in Decatur

Fire ants build in sunny, open ground along driveways, sidewalk edges, and the middle of the lawn. Squad Yard Defender works the whole yard instead of chasing single mounds, and it's included with Complete Home & Yard.

Year-Round Pest Coverage in Decatur

Home Shield is $99 a month and covers mosquitoes, ants, roaches, ticks, and spiders, indoors and out. Complete Home & Yard is $119 a month and adds rodents and 40-plus other pests, with Yard Defender built in.

When to Start Treatment in Decatur

Ticks call for a start in late March or early April, and mosquito visits follow as the weather warms. One earlier Decatur season on our books ran from mid-April to late October, and that's about the shape most years take.

The schedule bends when life does. One Decatur customer skipped the first visit of the year for a spring-break trip and picked up in early April. Another asked to push the next appointment back three weeks. Neither needed anything more than a phone call.

Getting Into the Back Yard

Most of the work on a Decatur lot happens behind the house, so if the crew can't get back there, the visit doesn't happen. On one account the technician found a dog loose in the back yard with nobody home, and the office sent an unable-to-complete notice after trying to reach the homeowner. On another, the crew couldn't get into the back yard at all, so the first visit was refunded and a walk-through was set up to sort out access. Gate tags are optional. Tell the office about pets, locks, and gates when you book.

Special Event Spray in Decatur

For a graduation, reunion, or backyard wedding, our Special Event Spray works in two steps. A few days before your event we apply a barrier treatment, and on the day itself we add a light mist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does TVA's mosquito work cover my Decatur yard?

TVA's mosquito work doesn't reach your Decatur yard. TVA manages mosquito breeding on Wheeler Reservoir through water levels, and the refuge pumps its impoundments dry through summer, but neither reaches private property in Decatur. Backyard mosquitoes breed in downspouts, drains, toys, birdbaths, and low spots, which is where a barrier treatment and a source check come in.

How late in the year should mosquito treatment run in Decatur?

Mosquito treatment in Decatur should run through the end of October. The river's managed season winds down after Labor Day, but backyard breeding keeps going until the first hard frost, and that usually arrives around the end of October.

Why am I still getting bitten in late September?

Late-September bites in Decatur usually come from water on or right next to the property, since containers and drains keep producing after the reservoir drawdown begins. If you call the office, we'll book a return visit.

Is termite control available in Decatur?

Mosquito Squad of Huntsville - Northern Alabama doesn't offer termite control in Decatur or anywhere else in our Huntsville market. We handle mosquitoes, ticks, fire ants, ants, roaches, spiders, and rodents, and for termites we'd point a Decatur homeowner elsewhere.

What happens if the back yard is locked or a pet is outside?

If a technician can't safely reach the back yard of a Decatur property, the visit isn't completed and the office follows up to reschedule and sort out access. Letting the office know about gates, locks, and pets at booking means it won't happen.

What does pest control cost in Decatur?

Mosquito barrier treatment in Decatur runs as little as $74 a visit on a 21-day cycle. Home Shield is $99 a month, and Complete Home & Yard is $119 a month with rodents and 40-plus pests. The final number comes after we've looked at the property.
