F.A.Q.

Do mosquitoes keep biting in the fall when weather is still warm?

Yes. In Houston, mosquitoes can keep biting into the fall when warm weather allows them to remain active.

Fall doesn’t mean the end of the mosquito season in Houston. Mosquito activity depends a lot on temperature, and there can be no doubt of that. But around here, temperatures can stay warm enough to accommodate mosquitoes for a long time. Adult mosquitoes can continue flying, feeding, and biting for much longer than you might think.

Even in October, it still helps to manage the environment around your home. Standing water is the most important single thing to keep an eye on. Mosquitoes need water to reproduce, and even small amounts can support breeding. Buckets, planters, toys, clogged gutters, tarps, birdbaths, and other containers can continue holding water after rain or irrigation. Warm temperatures can then allow mosquito activity to continue around the property.

Shade is another big factor. Mosquitoes dry out easily in the sun, so they need to hide in humid microclimates during the day, such as in dense landscaping. This is why it helps to also thin out landscaping while you take steps to clear standing water.

If you plan on spending a lot of time outside, it’s wise to use an insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin. You may also try permethrin-treated clothes. This is most helpful around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes tend to be the most active.

A cool spell may reduce mosquito activity for a little while, but it won’t stop it. A return to warmer weather can make mosquitoes noticeable again. In Houston’s climate, that can extend mosquito pressure well beyond the period many homeowners think of as peak summer.
