Mice infected with Toxoplasma gondii lose their fear of natural prey, like cats. Though this probably sounds like science fiction, it’s a part of how this parasite sets out to continue proliferation. A mouse that isn’t afraid of its prey is more likely to become a victim to said prey, thereby allowing the parasite to move on to its preferred host.

So, there’s no need to fear packs of zombie mice roaming the streets and yards of El Paso. This story is merely a strange reminder that rodents interact with far more than we humans might realize. They navigate across soil, near trash bin areas, and inside outbuildings, wall voids, garages, and storage spaces. And anytime they’re active around our homes, they bring concerns with them.
