How Do Seasonal Changes Affect Idaho Pest Activity?

They say there’s nothing quite like Idaho weather. One day it’s warm, sunny, and perfect. The next it’s literally winter. Sometimes, there’s no in between. 

So, while you’re turning on your heat on a random August afternoon, the pests around your home feel that shift too (probably before you did). 

Because within that sudden cold snap, are pests looking for ways to adjust to the sudden drop in temperature. So, what changes about pest activity in East Idaho during that summer-to-fall transition? 

Late Summer is Peak Pest Time

The spring warmth allows the first mosquitoes of the year to quietly breed and multiply from the snowmelt and newly released irrigation water. During summer, more pests build their populations week by week, compounding over time. Then, by late summer, pest populations are weaved into your property’s ecosystem (and this is where pest activity peaks).

• They gather on sunlit siding in the warmest part of the day - here they seek out residual heat from the sun before temperatures drop at night.
• Cluster on south and west-facing walls in high numbers - stink bugs, box elders, and others are part of this list. And this means they’re looking for a way in. 

Signs for rodents: 

• Droppings near foundation edges, garage doors, or entry points
• Gnaw marks around utility line penetrations, door frames, or wood trim
• Burrow openings near the foundation or under stairs and decks
• Grease marks or smudging along walls where rodents travel repeatedly
• Nesting material tucked into gaps around vents, pipes, or under siding

And a little side note about rodent control: Eastern Idaho's winters are long and cold enough that once rodents commit to a location, they stay. Which means, once they establish, they are truly difficult to remove without professional help.
