Tips to Stop Flies from Overwintering in Omaha Homes

Buzz, buzz. You hear it often. Even in the winter! And you wonder why the harsh chill of winter didn’t kill them off yet (or even the chilly fall weather).
But, little did you know, those pesky flies had a plan. While the outside air is chilly, your home remains warm and toasty. That can give shelter-seeking flies a place to spend the colder months.
And we know, in Omaha, fly control might not be at the top of your list come fall and winter. Why would it? Flies are a summer problem…
Until they decide to overwinter inside your home. Their shelter-seeking behavior attracts them to upper rooms, attics, wall voids, and sunny windows in an attempt to survive.
But, truly, why do flies decide to overwinter inside your home?
How Flies Get Into Attics and Wall Voids
Flies can enter your home in many ways. All it takes is an opportunity.
And if your home has extra cracks and crevices, the more opportunities they’ll have to enter.
Here are a few spots to look for:
- Gaps around siding
- Soffits
- Vents
- Windows
- Rooflines
- Utility penetrations
Sealing up a few of these spots will make it much more difficult for flies to enter. That can help reduce the number of flies settling indoors for winter. If you allow too many flies in, they’ll be buzzing all winter.
Why Flies May Reappear on Warm Winter Days
Also keep in mind, because you’re seeing flies (and possibly other insects) buzzing around inside, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re breeding inside your home.
Here’s what it means: insects already sheltering inside your home can become more active when the inside of your home gets warmer. So, the warmer your home is, the more likely you are to have flies buzzing around (if they’ve already settled inside).
Fall Exclusion Steps That Can Help
Here are a few things you can do to keep flies out (before they decide to overwinter):
- Repair any broken screens - Flies love to find weaknesses in screens to enter your home.
- Seal exterior gaps - Flies can use utility lines or other penetrations to gain access to your home.
- Check your attic - Flies tend to gather in higher places.
- Check soffit openings - These are common openings that many pests use (including flies).
- Keep doors closed as much as possible - Leaving doors open literally gives flies an open invitation.
- Seal any other obvious entry points - Walk the perimeter of your home for any other entry points.
Keep in mind, doing these tasks will help decrease fly populations, but it won’t do everything. Despite doing this, you might still end up with flies buzzing inside your home.
What to Do About Flies Already Indoors
