Carpenter ants turn up in Independence yards that were quiet for fifteen years, and the call usually lands the summer after the lot behind the house got cleared. Something was living in that ground. Grading it doesn't send the residents out of the neighborhood, it sends them next door.

Here's what happened next, and it's the part that reaches your yard. Between 2010 and 2020 the Census Bureau measured land area moving from 17.44 square miles to 17.56, while population climbed from 24,757 to 28,676. The boundary barely twitched. Almost sixteen percent more people moved inside it.

That growth went into the gaps. Pasture, hay ground, and woodlot parcels that had sat undisturbed since the annexations came up for development one at a time, surrounded on three sides by houses that were already there. Independence has an edge in the middle of town, not just at the rim, and it moves.

University of Kentucky entomologists note that colonies establish outdoors in trees, stumps, and roots and enter homes when the opportunity comes up. Clearing a woodlot doesn't remove that wood. Pavement ants work the other half of it. UK's ant control guidance puts them under slabs and along pavement cracks, so every walk, patio, and garage apron poured in the last fifteen years qualifies. Fine grains of soil pushed up through a seam are the giveaway.

The two want different treatment, and you can call it yourself before we arrive. Coarse shavings near a deck post, a stump, or a fence line mean carpenter ants working wood. Soil grains in a joint mean pavement ants. Ant control that goes at the nest is the only kind that holds, since chasing the trail on your counter changes nothing, because it refills from outside.

Wasps and Yellowjackets in Independence

Look down before you look up on these lots. Yellowjackets build belowground in old rodent burrows, and a parcel that spent forty years as field is riddled with them. The voles don't stay once the graders arrive. Their burrows do, and a queen looking for a site in April inherits a subdivision's worth of finished real estate.
