Mosquito, Tick & Pest Control in Fort Mitchell, KY

Fort Mitchell has required a fence around backyard pools since 1967. The city code still spells it out. The fence has to stand at least four feet tall, and every gate has to close and latch on its own. It's a sensible rule for families with kids. If the area we treat sits inside one, tell us how the gate opens when you book.

We're a family company with veteran owners, and Fort Mitchell has been part of our service area since 2013. The Fort Mitchell-area notes we pulled for this page kept pointing to where families actually spend their evenings. Sometimes that's the pool. Sometimes it's a garden planted down the hill in the trees, well away from the house.

Why Fort Mitchell Pest Pressure Looks Different

Most yard programs get built around the property line, since that's usually where ticks wait and mosquitoes drift in from a neighbor's shade. Several of the notes behind this page point somewhere else: ants working a pool deck, and winged insects dropping into the water in July. When a lot is set up to be used, the pests that matter most are often the ones sitting in the middle of it.

The edge Fort Mitchell does have is an odd one. Highland Cemetery on Dixie Highway has set aside 150 undeveloped acres for a Wildlife Enhancement Program, with trails running through woods bordered by Fort Mitchell, Fort Wright and Highland Pike. According to the cemetery's trail page, dead trees are left standing on purpose, and nest boxes around the grounds are meant for everything from bluebirds to raccoons. That's good stewardship. Our read, and it's an inference rather than anything the cemetery claims, is that ground managed to keep squirrels and raccoons around also keeps ticks well supplied with rides.

Drainage on the city's slopes is its own subject, covered in our post on mosquito season on Fort Mitchell's hills. This page stays on the lots themselves.

Mosquito Barrier Treatment for Fort Mitchell Yards

A pool that's chlorinated and running its filter won't raise mosquitoes. University of Kentucky entomologists do warn that a neglected pool, like a clogged gutter, can produce hundreds of mosquitoes in days. The weak spot on a Fort Mitchell lot is the off-season. A winter cover that's been catching rain and leaves since fall is a shallow pond sitting a few feet from the patio chairs. Pump it off after spring storms until the cover comes off.

Adults spend the day in shade, and that's where mosquito control either works or doesn't. UK's guidance points to the undersides of decks and the ground along foundations, and that's where the Mosquito Barrier Treatment lands, plus the shady side of a solid pool fence and the plantings around the equipment pad. We come back every 21 days, April into fall, and each visit works from our 7 T's of Mosquito Control. Pricing opens at $87 a visit. You can be at work when we come, though the gate latch matters.

People forget to mention the parts of the yard that aren't near the house. One customer in the Fort Mitchell area called the morning after a treatment: the backyard had been done, but mosquitoes were brutal down in the woods where the family was putting in gardens. Tell us about every piece of the property you spend time in, including anything past the tree line, so the technician knows to look at it. If you're not satisfied, call within 14 days of a service and we'll come back for a courtesy treatment at no charge.

Natural Treatment Option

Families growing food tend to ask about our Natural Treatment Option. The essential-oil formula knocks down mosquitoes and ticks right where it lands. Its residual is shorter than the standard barrier's, so the schedule tightens up in midsummer.

Ants on the Pool Deck

The ants on a pool deck are usually living under it, which is why surface-level ant control rarely lasts. The University of Kentucky's ant fact sheet places pavement ants beneath patio slabs and driveways, where they shove little piles of dirt out between the joints, and notes that ants like to travel along lines and edges. A pool deck is a long run of slab seams and coping edges baking in the sun, which suits them fine.

Here's a call we'd rather save you. Someone pays for a single ant treatment around the deck, and a month later there are more ants than before. UK explains why: the workers you see foraging are a small slice of the colony, so spraying what's visible usually fails, and blanket yard sprays seldom fix it either. What holds up is going after the colony and its entry points, visit after visit, until whatever's under the concrete quits rebuilding.

That's a coverage question as much as a treatment question. Home Shield, $99 per month, covers roaches, spiders, ants and wasps at the house and its perimeter. A colony living under a pool deck usually needs the baiting and mound work that Squad Yard Defender is built around, and that work comes built into Complete Home & Yard, $119 per month for the structure plus the entire yard.

Flying Ants in the Pool

Sometimes the right move is to wait. In July, a cloud of small winged insects can show up and start landing in the pool. They're usually ants on a mating flight. UK entomologist Jonathan Larson told WKYT that these flights often follow heavy rain and typically last a day or two, after which the males die off and new queens scatter. Since the flight ends on its own, spraying the yard for it mostly costs you money.

A swarm coming out of the house is another matter, since UK notes that winged ants indoors mean there's a nest inside. Save a few in a plastic bag and show us.

Tick Control in Fort Mitchell

Ticks ride in on animals, and a wooded preserve managed for wildlife supports plenty of animals. Yards backing the Highland Cemetery woods, or any wooded draw in town, get ticks dropped along the lawn edge by whatever crosses it overnight.

Gardeners carry the most exposure. Kneeling in a bed at the edge of the trees puts you right down in the leaf litter where ticks wait for a host. We treat that margin and the garden borders along it with our tick control program, built on the 6 C's of Tick Control. Across the region, emergency visits for tick bites have climbed to a nine-year high, so do a check when you come in from weeding.

Wasps at the Roofline and Year-Round Coverage

One Fort Mitchell request this summer was for a wasp or hornet nest tucked under a second-story roofline, right above the driveway. It's an awkward spot. You see the nest every time you pull in, and it's too high to reach from a stepladder. Requests like that get booked as a wasp and hornet evaluation first, since height and access decide how a nest comes down. Our hornet guide for Northern Kentucky is worth a read before anyone grabs a can of spray.

When the structure keeps producing problems, Home Shield handles the house. Complete Home & Yard takes in the whole yard, and no other tier covers rodents. Fleas and chiggers come with it too. One household in the Fort Mitchell area moved up to Complete Home & Yard this summer to get more of the property covered. Once the nights cool, fall invaders start testing foundations.

When to Start in Fort Mitchell

April, before the pool cover comes off. UK notes that under ideal conditions some mosquitoes can go from egg to adult in less than a week, so a cover holding April rain can raise mosquitoes well before Memorial Day weekend. Starting early also means the season's first wasp nests get found while they're still small. We usually run into October.

Special Events in Fort Mitchell

Hosting around the pool? Book a Special Event Spray at least 48 hours, ideally 72, before guests show up. If the cover is still on, pump it first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my swimming pool breed mosquitoes?

A pool in regular use, filtered and chlorinated, isn't the problem. The risk is the off-season. UK's mosquito fact sheet warns that a neglected pool can produce hundreds of mosquitoes in a few days, and a winter cover collecting rain and leaves behaves like a neglected pool. Pump the cover after spring storms, and our barrier treatment will handle the shade around the deck.

Why did the ants on my pool deck come back after a treatment?

Because the ants you see are a small share of the colony. Pavement ants nest under slabs and pavers, and a single spray around the deck kills foragers while the queens underneath keep producing. Ongoing ant control on the colony and its entry points is what wears it down. Deck colonies usually call for Yard Defender work, which comes built into Complete Home & Yard.

There's a swarm of flying ants over my pool. Do I need treatment?

Usually not. Winged ants on a mating flight tend to appear after heavy rain and they're usually done after a couple of days, according to University of Kentucky entomologist Jonathan Larson. Because the flight ends by itself, paying for a visit rarely changes anything. If winged ants are emerging inside the house, though, a nest is indoors and it's worth a call.

Will you treat a garden in the woods behind my house?

Tell us about it when you schedule. One Fort Mitchell-area customer's worst mosquitoes were down the slope where the family was planting gardens in the trees, past the part of the yard that had been treated. The technician can look at it and tell you what makes sense to treat. If you're growing food there, ask about the natural option.

Can you remove a wasp nest at my second-story roofline?

Yes. A second-story nest over a driveway came up in Fort Mitchell this summer. We book it as an evaluation first, since height and access decide the equipment and the approach. Until then, park away from it if you can and keep kids and pets back. Home Shield keeps the eaves covered afterward.
