Mosquito, Tick & Pest Control in Elsmere, KY
Elsmere spent 2023 testing whether residents could keep backyard chickens. The urban chicken pilot went live that May, and in early 2024 the council introduced a permanent ordinance that, as LINK nky reported, would allow up to eight hens per household with a city permit, no roosters, and the flock kept inside a fenced backyard. One Elsmere home on our route has birds, and the account has a warning typed across the top in capital letters so nobody shows up surprised.
We're the veterans and family behind Mosquito Squad of Northern Kentucky, and we started treating Kenton County yards in 2013. A coop changes how mosquito control and pest control work on a small Elsmere yard, so most of what follows is about the coop.
Why Elsmere Pest Pressure Looks Different
The two Elsmere accounts behind this page sit on roughly a quarter and a third of an acre, and each house is a little over 1,000 square feet. On yards that size, the shrubs where mosquitoes rest and a run full of hens can end up a few steps apart, with the fence line right behind both.
The city's own rule pushes them closer. Hens have to stay inside a fenced backyard, and that's the same shaded, enclosed ground adult mosquitoes use to get through a hot afternoon. We haven't measured this, so take it as our inference: a flock in Elsmere nearly always sits inside the treatment area instead of off to the side of it.
Mosquito Barrier Treatment in Elsmere
Mosquito control in Elsmere starts with our Mosquito Barrier Treatment. It goes onto the cover mosquitoes hide in during the day: under the deck, through the foundation shrubs, along the shady face of a privacy fence. Visits come every 21 days at $87 and up, and the work gets done whether or not anyone is home.
The 7 T's of Mosquito Control list the homeowner's half of the job between visits. In a yard with chickens, add the spare buckets and folded tarps that pile up around a run and catch rainwater.
If you keep birds, mention them on the booking call. Tell us where the coop and run sit and whether the hens roam the yard during the day. That gets written on the account before anyone walks the yard, the same way the Elsmere flock above is flagged on ours.
Natural Treatment Option
Some chicken keepers would prefer no conventional product near the flock. The natural mosquito treatment uses an essential-oil formula instead. It's lethal to the mosquitoes and ticks it reaches, but it wears off sooner, so midsummer visits get scheduled closer together. It's worth asking about if the run takes up a big share of the backyard.
Backyard Chickens and the Pests That Follow
Two problems tend to show up around a coop, and they're handled very differently.
The first is mites on the birds. Lee Townsend, an entomologist with UK Extension, explains in a fact sheet on backyard chicken parasites that northern fowl mites can get started from wild birds that visit feeders or perch on the enclosure, and that an infestation is often severe before anyone notices it. Control for that mite is aimed at the birds, with products labeled for poultry that are usually sold at farm supply stores. That is flock care, not yard work, and we won't pretend a barrier visit fixes it. Moving the songbird feeder away from the run is an easy first step.
The second is mice. UK's fact sheet on controlling mice says house mice prefer seeds and grain and usually forage no more than 10 to 25 feet from their nest. Layer feed is grain. Our inference is that spilled feed under a coop, with a shed or woodpile nearby, gives mice what they need within a few strides of an Elsmere house. A metal can with a tight lid helps. Rodent work comes only with Complete Home & Yard, and if there are birds on the property, tell us so the rodent plan is built around them.
Starting Service in Late July
Both Elsmere households behind this page started service in the last days of July. One asked for the soonest opening we had. That is later than we would suggest, but it isn't too late to bother.
The first visit happens within 48 business hours if the weather allows, with no contract to sign. From there the 21-day cycle runs on its own. The only real cost of starting mosquito control in midsummer is that the first treatment is knocking back a population that has already built up, where an April start keeps it from building in the first place.
Tick Control in Elsmere
Some keepers figure the hens will clean up the ticks. We wouldn't count on it. A flock works the open yard, and ticks wait in the places a flock and a mower both skip: leaf litter piled in a fenced corner and the tall grass behind the coop. The Independence post about ticks on treeless lots shows how little cover they need.
Tick control goes after those spots, and the 6 C's of Tick Control explain the thinking. Ticks start moving in spring before mosquitoes do, and the post we wrote about the tick ER visit spike shows why waiting is a gamble.
Ants, Mice and Year-Round Plans
Home Shield, at $99 per month, handles ants inside the house and out, along with spiders, roaches and wasps.
For $119 per month, Complete Home & Yard layers in Yard Defender services, fleas, chiggers and rodent coverage. For a household with hens, our view is that the rodent piece is what makes the bigger tier worth a look. Yard Defender also sells on its own for flea, tick and ant mound work, with each yard spray lasting up to 21 days.
Mice tend to push indoors as the weather cools, which we covered in fall invaders and rodents. A feed bin in the garage gives them a reason to aim for your door.
When to Start in Elsmere
Mosquitoes get going around mid-April here, and ticks start before that, so early spring is the best time to sign up. Treatments generally continue into October.
Spring is also when a lot of people add birds. Townsend's advice is to assume new birds arrive with mites, treat them, and keep them apart from the flock until treatment is done. Do that before the new hens join the run, and book yard service the same month.
Special Events in Elsmere
On an Elsmere lot, a birthday or graduation party out back happens a few steps from the run. Schedule the Special Event Spray a couple of days ahead so everything is dry before guests arrive, and tell us where the hens are when you call.
