Why Mosquitoes Are Most Active at Dusk

Sleepy evenings at dusk seem like the perfect time to relax. In early summer, sitting outside in the evening feels like it could fix all your problems. But, unfortunately, there’s already an obvious problem with sitting outside at dusk: mosquitoes.
You can’t seem to go one evening without that shrill mosquito buzz and incessant biting. Every time it’s time to relax, mosquitoes are always there to join you (to your dismay). So, why are mosquitoes so active at dusk? The facts might surprise you.
The Science Behind Dusk Mosquito Activity
The most common mosquito species are crepuscular, which means they're biologically programmed to be most active during the low-light periods (i.e. dawn and dusk).
Think about how dusk feels: cooler temps, higher humidity, and low wind. All three characteristics of dusk make flying easier, more efficient, and less dehydrating for a small, flimsy insect who struggles in the heat of day. So, it only makes sense that mosquitoes would begin feeding in these more comfortable conditions.
Mosquitoes also locate their hosts through CO2 plumes, body heat, and lactic acid. All of these cues are more detectable in the still, cooler air that settles in at dusk. And the calmer the air, the more effectively those signals carry. Which is, unfortunately, exactly when you're sitting still by the fire or on the patio.
Why Dusk Hits Harder in Hayward's Lake Country
Mosquitoes coming out at dusk is a problem just about everywhere, but in Hayward, it’s particularly bad. Sawyer County's lake country setting means that peak mosquito hours coincide directly with campfires on the shoreline, evening fishing trips, and lakeside gatherings. So, while these activities make Hayward summers delightful, they can also make for a biting itch-fest.
In addition to this, the surrounding lakes, wetlands, and forested borders that make the area so beautiful also provide an abundance of the breeding habitat and shaded resting cover that support large mosquito populations. And by the time dusk rolls around, the mosquitoes are well-rested and well-fed. They’ll emerge from vegetation, and there you’ll be.
What Doesn't Work For Mosquito Control
It’s possible you’ve tried to take mosquito control into your own hands. And it’s understandable. There are many potential do-it-yourself solutions out there. But, not all are created equal.
- Bug zappers - UV light zappers do attract insects, but they attract mostly non-target species, not mosquitoes. Mosquitoes locate hosts through CO2 and body heat, not UV light, which means zappers largely eliminate beneficial insects while doing very little to reduce the mosquitoes ruining your evening.
- Citronella candles and tiki torches - They may provide a small amount of relief right around you in very still conditions, but their effective range is minimal. They ultimately do nothing to address the resting population sheltering in the vegetation around your yard.
