Where Do All These Mosquitoes Come from in Spring?

Springtime mosquitoes in our area don’t just suddenly appear out of thin air. Many have spent the entire winter nearby as dormant eggs or larvae, just waiting for the spring warm-up.

Even adult females can remain alive and well, suspended in a state known as diapause, in hidden spaces around our home all winter long.

April brings longer days, spring rain, and those first warm afternoons that naturally bring us outdoors. Then comes that familiar whining close to your ear. And while it probably feels like mosquitoes arrived overnight, their long-awaited springtime debut has been many long, cold months in the making.

Mosquitoes Have More Than a Single Winter Survival Plan

All Massachusetts mosquito species don’t spend winter the same way. Some might have overwintered in damp soil as eggs. As a matter of fact, some eggs are hardy enough to tolerate months and months of cold, dry weather while remaining viable.

Other species survive as larvae in water, where their development slows during the cold season. Some adult females enter diapause, a state of arrested development that helps them conserve needed energy throughout winter. They shelter wherever they can find protection and become active again when the season signals a change through longer hours of daylight and a sustained increase in temperature.

If you have lived in the area for any amount of time, you have probably already figured out that winter doesn’t wipe the mosquito slate clean. It simply presses the pause button.

April Rain Jumpstarts the Mosquito Life Cycle

Woodland pools, drainage areas, ditches, and backyard containers are replenished by springtime rain and snowmelt. This renewal of water sources triggers eggs to hatch. And once water meets the right temperature, overwintering larvae will resume development therein.

While all this takes time, mosquito development accelerates as spring weather grows warmer. What’s more, different habitats produce mosquitoes at different points in the season. So, one mosquito you see today and one you see a few days from now have likely come from different habitats and perhaps even started spring in different phases of life.
