Keep Mosquitoes Away From Summer Parties

How to Keep Mosquitoes Away From Your Yard During Summer Parties in Guilford

Living on the Connecticut shoreline means your backyard parties come with a view. And mosquitoes. Lots of mosquitoes. Can you hear them buzzing?

Tidal marshes and coastlines are great places for mosquitoes to be fruitful and multiply. And the unfortunate fact is that even if you mow your lawn and dump out all standing water, you’ll likely still have to deal with them flying in from elsewhere. This is never clearer than when the breeze dies down on a summer evening and the marsh-bred mosquitoes find their way inland (and porchward).

Now picture a Guilford summer party without mosquito control. You can set up a beautiful evening on the patio, but if you haven't addressed the mosquitoes, people might just remember the bites more than the food.

Here’s how you can keep your gathering comfortable, starting before your guests arrive.

Schedule Treatment Before the Event

Everything else on this list is supplemental. The step that will change your mosquito situation the most is professional Guilford mosquito control applied at least 48 hours before guests arrive. That gives the barrier treatment ample time to work because mosquitoes will have a chance to interact with it when they stop to rest.

If you entertain regularly through the season, a recurring treatment plan from Mosquito Squad of New Haven & Fairfield County can help you make sure every event is covered with no extra effort on your part. Treatment is done on a 21-day cycle so that the pests never get a chance to regroup. And you never have to scramble right before a big weekend.

But even having said that, if it's a one-time occasion like a graduation, reunion, or anniversary, you can always have a special event spray done. These are timed specifically to your date.

Either way, you can expect the mosquito population to decrease by up to 90%, even before you’ve gotten all the RSVPs.

Do Your Own Prep the Day Before & Day Of

The day before your event, walk the gathering area and deal with standing water. Plant saucers, kids' toys, tarps, grill covers—anything that holds water can give mosquitoes a chance to reproduce. Even a bottle cap of water is enough to give mosquitoes a breeding site.

Mow the grass in and around the party area. Trim back shrubs or dense vegetation near where people will sit. Mosquitoes rest in shaded vegetation during the day and come out at dusk, which just so happens to be the best hour for summer parties.

On the day of, consider where you’re placing things. Keep food and seating away from the densest vegetation on your property. If your yard has a wooded edge or a wet, shaded corner, that’s where mosquitoes tend to congregate. The farther your gathering is from those zones, the less trouble you’ll have.

Fans make a bigger difference than most people expect. Mosquitoes are weak fliers, and even moderate airflow can be a real struggle for them. A few box fans near seating will create a zone comfortable for guests and uncomfortable for mosquitoes.

You may also be tempted to put up citronella and Tiki torches. They’re certainly better than nothing, but their effectiveness is measured in inches, not yards. A few candles on the table won’t stop a serious mosquito problem. Likewise, personal repellent sprays work well for individual guests, but they’re no substitute for treating the yard.
