According to a September 22, 2026 NBC Los Angeles report, Los Angeles County had recorded 109 flea-borne typhus cases in 2026 as of that date. A localized outbreak in Wilshire Center involved seven symptomatic cases, six of which required hospitalization; all seven patients recovered. County health officials are urging residents to reduce flea exposure and limit rodent and wildlife activity around homes.
How Flea-Borne Typhus Spreads
Flea-borne typhus can spread when bacteria in infected flea feces enter broken skin or are rubbed into the eyes. Stray cats, rodents, opossums, and other animals can carry these fleas into yards, garage areas, and within homes as pests seek indoor access to food, shelter, and water. Fleas can move between animal hosts and the areas around homes, creating opportunities for exposure. Fleas can also remain in carpets, pet bedding, and other fabrics inside the home.
Why Flea and Rodent Activity Around Homes Matters
While it may be difficult to fully eradicate rodents and fleas at your Los Angeles home, it's important for residents to address the conditions that increase flea and rodent activity around the home. Flea activity within outdoor living areas can increase the chance of contact with fleas that may carry the infection.
As families and pets play within outdoor areas, they can unknowingly come in contact with flea habitats. As rodents and other pests enter through attics, crawlspaces, or garage areas, they can drop fleas into carpeted areas, ventilation systems, and other commonly used areas where a passing person or pet can quickly become an easy host.
Steps Households Can Take to Reduce Exposure
Los Angeles residents can help reduce exposure through a few common steps. Ensure pets remain on a year-round flea control program and consult your veterinarian if you are concerned about flea exposure. Avoid contact with wild animals and stray pets to reduce the possibility of coming into contact with adult fleas or flea eggs. Reduce leaf litter, brush, and dense vegetation around your Los Angeles home as these conditions can encourage rodent and wildlife movement or nesting.
Ensure pet food, bird seed, and trash bins are properly sealed to reduce attracting opossums, rodents, squirrels, and other outdoor pests that may carry adult fleas and flea eggs. Conduct a home inspection to repair and seal areas around the home where pests can enter into your indoor living spaces and drop flea eggs or adult fleas within the home.
