Are There Indoor and Outdoor Ants in El Paso?

And here’s an interesting point about finding ants inside your house: It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve got an indoor ant colony.
Some ants originate from their outdoor nests, finding themselves inside looking for food and water. Others might be living behind your walls, beneath flooring, or in another well-protected location inside your home.
Knowing the difference between ant species can help determine the most effective way to address an ant problem.
Which Ants Mostly Live Outdoors in El Paso?
Many ant species prefer colonies that are established in soil, beneath rocks, and around landscaping, among other outdoor locations. In our region, harvester ants and fire ants both establish their colonies outdoors.
Harvester ants build their nests underground, collecting seeds for food. Some species have painful stings, so it’s not advisable to disturb their colonies.
The presence of fire ants can vary by location and species. Their underground nests are marked with the tell-tale mound, and their omnivorous diet consists of plant and animal matter.
Other ants can be found foraging around patios, sidewalks, foundations, and within landscape beds. And even though some ant species establish outdoor colonies, they might enter houses looking for sustenance.
Ants found inside the home, say in your kitchen, often originate from a colony just feet away, on the other side of the wall.
Which Ants Can Live Indoors?
Certain ants are capable of nesting inside homes, especially if they find moisture, protection, and sustainable food sources. For example, pharaoh ants are known for establishing colonies in wall voids, around kitchen appliances, and within other protected indoor locations.
Other ant species find favorable living conditions in structural voids or other concealed spaces. And unlike outdoor colonies, indoor ant populations aren’t necessarily affected by shifting outdoor temperatures – climate-controlled homes provide relatively stable conditions throughout the year.
Why Are Outdoor Ants Coming into My House?
Our dry desert environment can make dependable moisture sources attractive to ants. Foraging ants might target indoor areas, like leaking pipes, pet water bowls, and wet areas around sinks.
And then there’s food, also a powerful incentive. Crumbs, kitchen spills, open pantry items, and available pet food can encourage visits, seemingly on continuum. What’s more, some ant species are incapable of keeping their food sources secret, leaving a chemical trail to guide additional worker ants to the same location.
Seriously, one curious ant can invite the whole neighborhood into your home.
