Virginia, filled with open spaces like gorgeous farmlands and protected wilderness areas, is a haven for nature lovers. However, not every part of nature is quite so enjoyable. One of those parts we’re referring to is pests, or more specifically in this case, the spotted lanternfly.
Though they might not seem dangerous, they can certainly cause damage, making them yet another pest that you don’t want to leave unattended if you spot them (pun intended) in your yard. Let’s talk about the kind of damage spotted lanternflies cause and how our pest control treatments help prevent it.
When and Where Are Spotted Lanternflies Found?
Spotted lanternflies were first discovered in 2014 in Pennsylvania and have spread to an additional 17 states since. Unfortunately, we now know them to be an invasive species, so their expansion throughout the northeastern US is not exactly a pleasant event. Native to Asia, they’re about an inch long (as adults) and have gray wings covered in black spots.
They typically hatch in May and live in the nymph phase for a few months, during which time they are often mistaken for ticks. While they last through the fall, they don’t ever really go away. This is because during the fall, they lay eggs on trees and other hard, vertical surfaces and cover them with a protective layer that protects them during the winter. Then, they’ll hatch in the spring, and the cycle begins all over again.
Why Spotted Lanternfly Control is So Important
Spotted lanternflies don’t bite or sting like other pests, making them harmless to humans, but they’re devastatingly destructive to trees and plants. In fact, they’ve severely impacted agricultural production, destroying crops and disrupting supply chains. They do this by feeding on the sap from trees and plants, reducing their vital nutrients until they weaken, develop disease, and die.
They prefer fruit trees and leave behind a sugary waste known as honeydew, which allows mold to develop and attract other unwelcome pests like wasps. Spotted lanternfly egg masses are often gray or tan and look like a smear of mud. If you notice them, scrape them off the surface and destroy them in a bleach or dish detergent solution.
