Massachusetts Makes the Top 10 List for Mosquitoes & Ticks!

December 20, 2023

Mosquito Squad, with help from our partner Thermacell, has determined the worst cities for mosquitoes and the worst states for ticks across the nation. Our top 10 list was calculated from the number of treatments provided to those areas in combination with the volume of tick tube sales. While some of the results are surprising, I don’t think anyone in Massachusetts is surprised to see us in the #2 spot for ticks. But, we might be surprised to learn that the Boston area is the #1 worst city for mosquitoes!

Massachusetts Mosquitoes Are Worse Than You Thought

On an average summer evening in Middleborough or Lakeville, you might comment about how bad the mosquitoes are – but you might never think they REALLY are worse here than in Florida or another notorious mosquito haven.

Your comment on a mosquito-heavy night is not too far off reality! Our climate offers plenty of moisture for mosquitoes to grow and thrive. When the weather is warm from spring until fall, the mosquitoes take full advantage of it. And Massachusetts mosquitoes are NOT just annoying; they can carry dangerous diseases.

The Massachusetts Department of Health monitors mosquito-disease, and almost 300 mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Encephalitis in 2017 alone. For your sanity and your health, consider backyard mosquito control treatment as the most effective option for taking back your yard.

Ticks Continue to Thrive the Bay State

If you’ve lived here very long, you are likely familiar with deer ticks. You may have picked them off your dog after a hike, and hopefully, you check yourself and your kids for them regularly after spending time outdoors. Massachusetts is #2 on the list of worst states for ticks.

And while ticks are gross and no one likes going through the process with tweezers to remove them, they are extremely dangerous. Tickreport.com reported that in 2018 almost 30% of ticks sent in for testing were carrying Borrelia general species – a form of the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

If you pick only three ticks off your children or pets all summer long, chances are one of those has had the bacteria that could lead to Lyme Disease. But, without a treated yard, you are likely finding many more than three ticks in a season. If you would like to enjoy less hassle and more peace-of-mind, our intensive tick control program will reduce ticks on your property by 90%.

The evidence is in, mosquitoes and ticks are out in Southeastern Massachusetts. Call the award-winning professionals at Mosquito Squad today to get a free quote and take back your yard!
