Tips for Helping Keep Your Family From Ticks in Omaha

Ticks don't get the same attention as mosquitoes in Omaha, but they probably should. They're active earlier in the season, they're harder to spot, and the diseases they carry can have lasting consequences. You don’t want to have to deal with Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, or any other illness that comes along with tick bites.

Here’s how Omaha families can reduce their tick exposure from spring to fall.

Know When Ticks Are Active in Omaha, NE

Ticks don't wait for summer to be a problem. Deer ticks can become active once temperatures hit the low 40s, which in Omaha can happen in March. Dog ticks follow a few weeks later.

The upshot of this is that by the time most people start thinking about pest control, ticks have already been active for weeks.

This means that early-season awareness matters. If your kids or pets are playing near wooded edges, tall grass, leaf litter, or brush piles, they may have already run into some ticks this season.

Manage Your Yard

You might associate trails and parks with ticks. But if you’re going to run into ticks, it’s probably going to happen on your own property because you spend a lot of time there.

Of all the spots on your property, the transition zone between maintained lawns and wooded or overgrown areas is likely the most risky. There, ticks wait for a host to walk past, their legs facing outward and ready to latch on. This behavior is called questing.

Yardwork like mowing the grass and clearing leaf litter and brush helps here. Create a clear border between your lawn and any wooded areas—a 3-foot strip of wood chips or gravel works well for this. Move play equipment and seating areas away from wooded edges and into the sunnier, drier parts of your yard.

If you have firewood, it’s a good idea to keep it at least 20 feet from the house. Stacking it neatly helps, as messy woodpiles are good habitats for ticks and the rodents that carry them.

Do Tick Checks After Every Outdoor Session

Ticks don't transmit disease immediately, with most pathogens taking 24 to 48 hours to transmit. Finding and removing ticks early dramatically reduces the risk of transmission. These facts alone make tick checks the single most important precaution you can take, and it’s not close.

Check kids thoroughly after they've been playing outside. Common spots for ticks to hide include behind ears, along the hairline, in skin folds, around the waistband, and behind the knees. For pets, check around the collar, between toes, inside ears, and under the tail.

If you find an attached tick, remove it with fine-tipped tweezers by grasping as close to the skin as possible and pulling straight up with steady pressure. Resist the urge to twist or squeeze the tick, and do not try to burn the tick.

Dress for Defense & Use Repellents

It’s not exactly a runway look, but long pants tucked into socks is a good way to prevent ticks from latching onto you when you spend time near tall grass or wooded areas. Treating clothing and shoes with permethrin is another effective way to protect yourself without much effort.

For everyday yard use, this level of preparation isn’t always practical. But for hikes, outdoor chores near wooded edges, and camping, it’s worth doing.

EPA-registered repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus are effective against ticks. Apply to exposed skin and clothing, especially around ankles, legs, and waistline where ticks are most likely to make contact.
