Common Spring Pests in Omaha, Nebraska

Nebraska winters are good at one thing: making you forget about pests. Then the spring comes and they all show up, seemingly at the same time. Suddenly, you have a mosquito problem. And a tick problem, an ant problem, a wasp problem, and a spider problem. That’s a lot to deal with all at once.
Once the soil warms up and the spring rain comes in, a lot of different pests become active at once. Then the pest season begins in earnest. But there is a lot you can do about it once you know this is happening. It helps to start by identifying the common spring pests in Omaha.
Mosquitoes
Once temperatures reach the 50s regularly, mosquitoes start to wake up again. Right around that time, spring rainfall comes in and gives them exactly the standing water they need to breed. They don’t need a lot of standing water, either. A bottle cap’s worth of it is more than enough and you can find hundreds of little pools that size in clogged gutters, plant saucers, and irrigation pooling.
The population starts small in April and only increases from that point onward. By June, what started as a few early mosquitoes can become a serious problem if breeding sources weren't addressed early. Getting a barrier treatment in April or May helps a lot. Controlling a small population early means they never get a chance to spiral out of control in the first place.
Ticks
Ticks are active earlier than most people realize. Deer ticks can start moving once temperatures hit the low 40s, which in Omaha can happen as early as March. Dog ticks follow a few weeks later. Both are present in the wooded edges, overgrown borders, and park-adjacent properties throughout the metro.
Lyme disease isn’t quite as bad in Nebraska as it is in the Upper Midwest and the Northeast, but it’s still not zero risk. And the tick population, including those carrying disease, is continuing to expand with time. It’s better not to take chances and make tick checks part of your routine, especially for kids and pets.
Ants
Ants are often the first pest Omaha homeowners notice in spring because they show up inside. As the soil warms, colonies become active and start foraging for food and moisture. They follow paths along foundations, through gaps under doors, and around plumbing penetrations. Pavement ants and odorous house ants are the most common species in the Omaha area.
To prevent ant problems, one thing you can do is seal entry points early in the season. If you have moisture issues inside, it’s also a good idea to address those. Ants are often drawn indoors for moisture rather than food.
Wasps and Hornets
Queen wasps emerge from overwintering in spring and immediately begin building new nests. Check eaves, soffits, fence posts, playground equipment, and ground-level areas around your property.
If you’re lucky enough to find a nest in April, it might be the size of a golf ball and you can easily take it down. That’s not the case in August when it’s the size of a watermelon and there are hundreds of wasps living inside. At that point, you need a pro. Early detection and removal is the simplest way to manage wasps.
Spiders
Spiders follow the food supply. As mosquitoes, flies, and ants become active in spring, spiders show up wherever insects are found, because they’re hungry and they’re looking for an easy meal. That’s why you can often find them around exterior lighting and in garage corners, basements, and crawl spaces.
Brown recluse spiders are present in Nebraska and tend to favor indoor spaces, particularly storage areas that don't get disturbed often. Most spider species aren't dangerous, but their webs accumulate quickly once insect activity picks up, and nobody enjoys finding one in the shower.
