At Mosquito Squad of Northeast Florida, we know that mosquitoes do not travel far and wide. Most species spend their whole miserable lives very close to where they originate. If you have a lot of mosquitoes around your home, they are breeding someplace nearby!

How Do You Keep Mosquitoes from Breeding Around Your Property?

One of our resources in mosquito control intelligence, The New York Times, just posted their guidance on “How to Stop Mosquitoes From Invading Your Outdoor Space.”

Similar in spirit to the 7Ts of city of Jacksonville mosquito control, The Times recommends the following:

1. Dump standing water weekly: Most female mosquitoes take a bloodmeal approximately once per week so keeping to your own weekly schedule of dumping and draining should help you keep ahead of the mosquito life cycle. Getting rid of standing water is the easiest, most actionable thing people can do.

2. Identify your mosquitoes that require city of Jacksonville mosquito control: The most likely dangers you will encounter in this area of Florida are from the Culex, Aedes, and Anopheles mosquitoes.

3. Reduce outside water collectors by drilling holes in the bottoms of trash cans and recycling buckets: Just be sure to keeps cans covered as an additional preventive step, and while you’re at it, any rain barrels you have should be fitted with a lid or screen on top.

4. Use larvicides on water features: Birdbaths, ornamental ponds, and other water elements that you don’t want to disturb can easily be treated with larvicidal products. Don’t worry about poisoning pond fish or other wildlife as the insecticide they contain only activates at the specific pH found in a mosquito’s gut.

5. Diligently check your gutters: A bit of annual gutter maintenance should greatly help to get rid of any debris and fix any issues that would result in puddles forming in your gutter. During spring, after a rainfall, carefully and safely get up on a ladder and take a look at your gutters for places where leaves or water are being retained. While up there, look for sags in the gutters, which you can fix by simply adjusting the hangers and putting the proper pitch back on the gutters.

6. Fill in low-lying areas on your property, such as ditches and foot slopes: Dips, ditches, and depressions in your landscaping that tend to stay boggy after a rainfall could become a breeding ground. Fill them in with topsoil of whatever material best suits your landscape.
