High Wasp Activity Areas in Your Yard You May Be Overlooking

Hornets and wasps tend to concentrate in hard-to-see areas like rooflines, beneath home siding, and up in trees. Keep them away with Morritown NJ hornet control

Living in the Northeast comes with a lot of perks, including a stunning outdoor living season, but what are some downsides of this time of year? There aren’t many downsides; however, pests can be quite common in our backyard living spaces during the warmer months. Mosquitoes and ticks, as always, are big concerns in the Northeast due to their ability to transmit diseases and cause annoying bites, and they aren’t the only ones you should keep an eye out for. Stinging wasps and hornets should be on your radar as well. These close relatives of bees are commonly mistaken for their honey-gathering cousins; it is important not to confuse the two. While honey bees are relatively unaggressive and like to keep to their own business, wasps and hornets are the opposite in that they may approach and even attack you if you come anywhere near them or their nests. Yet another difference between hornets, wasps, and honey bees is that wasps and hornets can sting you many times in a row, rather than a single sting from bees. For bees, delivering a sting is a fatal endeavor for them as their stinger detaches from their bodies, while wasps and hornets have no such limitations. When aggravated, one of these pests can deliver several stings in very little time, and their stings are far more painful.

If you’ve ever been stung by a wasp, you know this pain, which is why you would likely be wary of a full nest’s worth of stingers. Angering a wasp nest, particularly in the late summer when nests are at their largest, actually poses significant health risks. The human body can only handle so much pain and so much toxic venom before entering the early stages of toxic shock, which can occur if you receive tens or even hundreds of stings from angry wasps or hornets. So where should you keep an eye out for these creatures? Often, wasps and hornets will create nests in areas that receive little attention, such as in the corner of a garage ceiling, under rooflines, and even under the siding of your home if you have slatted wood or synthetic shingles. If you see a wasp, don’t follow it, but see if you can keep an eye on it until it returns to the nest, allowing you to identify the threat. Dealing with hornets on your own, however, isn’t advisable and should be left to the professionals.
