How to Mosquito-Proof Your Yard Before Spring Events in Fredericksburg
Spring is in the air in Fredericksburg. And shortly after the flowers bloom will come the graduations, weddings, and cookouts. Oh, and the mosquitoes. Plenty of them too.
In Virginia, the first real breeding cycle kicks off in April and May. And that’s not great timing, because that’s right when most people start planning outdoor events.
If you're hosting anything outside this spring, the time to prep is before the invitations go out.
Remove Every Source of Standing Water
If you had to do just one thing on this list, this would be the one. Look for standing water and get rid of it. This is where mosquitoes breed, and if you can get rid of the standing water, you can control them on a population level.
Clogged gutters are a common culprit here. Leaves trap water in gutters and that gives mosquitoes a safe place to breed. It’s also smart to dump water out of plant saucers, flower pots, and bird baths. Grill covers and tarps also tend to collect rainwater in their folds, so be sure to check for that. Even kids’ toys and low spots in the yard can be trouble if you don’t keep an eye on them.
Walk your property and deal with all of it. Dump, drain, flip, or fix the drainage. If you want to learn more about what to do here, we have a video on the 7 T's of mosquito control that provides more detail.
Trim, Mow, and Thin
Mosquitoes rest in tall grass, dense hedges, and overgrown vegetation during the day. They emerge at dusk, which is exactly when most spring events just so happen to have their best hours. The less resting habitat you have near your gathering space, the fewer mosquitoes your guests will encounter.
So be sure to mow the lawn and trim dense hedges. If you have leaf litter from last winter or dead vegetation, now is the time to remove it, especially away from where people will gather. Pay special attention to the edges of the yard where maintained lawn meets wooded or overgrown areas.
If your yard has low spots that hold water for days after rain, those are breeding sites. Spring is the time to address them, so fill the low spots, regrade if necessary, or improve drainage so water doesn't sit. A problem that's been there all winter can quickly become a mosquito factory once temperatures warm up.
Schedule Treatment Before Your Event
Once mosquitoes get a foothold, it’s hard to get rid of them by DIY means. So if you’re already swatting and you have an event coming up, a barrier treatment is your best bet. Be sure to schedule one 24 to 48 hours before your event, and you can reduce mosquito populations by up to 90% for 21 days at a time.
Barrier treatments target spots where mosquitoes rest and breed. That means a professional will go after the source of the problem, not just the mosquitoes you see flying around. But the treatment is still effective on the ones you see flying around.
For one-time occasions like a wedding, graduation, or reunion, you could also have a special event spray timed right before your event.
If you do all this, then when the event day comes, you can enjoy it knowing that pests are not likely to be a big problem. And that’s the way it should be. Spring in Fredericksburg is too nice to spend indoors!
