Your Outdoor Pest Control Spring Checklist for Central VA
The work you do now will determine how much you’re able to enjoy your yard in June. Central Virginia has a moderate climate, which means that pests don’t wait long after winter to get going. Ticks start hitching rides on legs once temperatures hit the 40s. Mosquitoes are out for blood as soon as it’s consistently above 50. And by the time you notice either of their populations taking off, you’re already behind.
That said, there is a lot you can do to keep pests from taking over your yard. Here are the actions that will help the most.
Walk Your Property and Deal With Standing Water
This is the single highest-return task on this list. Grab a cup of coffee and walk every inch of your yard looking for standing water. If you see plant saucers or birdbaths, tip them over and empty the water. If tarps over firewood or equipment are holding water, push the water off with your hand. Even kids’ toys can harbor mosquitoes if left unchecked.
Some underrated spots to consider: clogged gutters. This may even be the #1 source of mosquito breeding on residential properties. Low spots in the yard can also be a problem if they don’t drain properly after rain.
If you want to learn more about this, we have a video on the 7 T's of mosquito control. Seriously, standing water gives mosquitoes a place to breed. If you can get rid of standing water, you’ll control mosquitoes on a population level.
Clear Winter Debris
Leaf litter, fallen branches, and dead vegetation piled against the house or along fence lines create habitat for ticks, ants, and spiders. Ticks are the worst of the three because they tend to overwinter in leaf litter and become active earlier than the rest. If you clear away the material from your yard’s edges, it reduces the places they can stage before moving into your lawn.
It’s also a good idea to move firewood at least 20 feet from your house. Stacked firewood close to the exterior is one of the most common ways spiders, ants, and rodents get into homes.
Trim and Thin Vegetation
Shrubs pressed against the house create a highway for pests to move from the yard to the foundation. And that is often enough to help them get inside. Trim back everything so there is a clear gap between vegetation and your exterior walls.
If you have dense hedges and overgrown beds, spring is the time to thin them. Mosquitoes rest in shaded, humid vegetation during the day. The less of that you have near your patio and outdoor living areas, the fewer mosquitoes you’ll have at dusk.
Inspect and Seal Your Home's Exterior
Check door sweeps, window screens, and garage door seals. Repair or replace anything that's worn or damaged. Then check the less obvious entry points: gaps around utility lines, foundation cracks, dryer vents without proper covers.
Ants, spiders, and rodents all exploit the same openings. Sealing them before the warm season begins is one of the best things you can do to keep them outside where they belong.
Schedule Treatment Before the Season Starts
The earlier you get your first barrier treatment on the calendar, the better. Early springtick control is especially critical in Central VA. Ticks are active before most people are thinking about pest control, and Lyme disease risk starts building as soon as the weather warms.
And if you don’t want the pests to ever get a foothold, consider working with Mosquito Squad of Central VA. Treatment is done every 21 days, so you can enjoy greater protection from over 20 types of pests all season long.
