If you love gardening, but have trouble keeping pests away, here are some great ways to dissuade them.
What’s not to love about a beautiful cutting garden or a garden of herbs or veggies? We love gardens and the bounties they yield. Why wouldn’t pests and insects enjoy them too? Here are some preventative measures to reduce garden mosquitoes and pests without the use of harsh chemicals.
Plants and Predators, the Ecosystem Approach
One fantastic way to maintain a health garden is to create an ecosystem where flora and fauna exist harmoniously – well, except for the bugs that eat our plants. One great way to do this is to plant herbs, flowers, and other plant species that repel pests, such as eucalyptus, garlic, and marigolds.
Another way to create a positive garden ecosystem is to make it attractive to predators of mosquitoes, aphids, and other pests that bug us. Install birdhouses to entice birds to your garden, where they can feed on garden pests. You can additionally attract other animals, like ladybugs and toads by creating environments that are agreeable to them. Ladybugs love yarrow, cilantro, and dill. Toads require shade and moisture so perhaps a low-lying birdbath or other water feature will draw them in.
FUN FACT: Mosquito hawks are NOT mosquito predators but dragonflies are.
Keep Garden Plants Healthy, Properly Spaced for Fewer Pests
Garden invaders will seek out unhealthy plants, as they are easier to consume. Flies for instance, are attracted to decomposing matter, like plants and old food. Healthy plants will not be as attractive to bugs.
One way to keep plants healthy is to install them with proper spacing and prune them as needed to maintain that spacing. Overcrowded plants will not receive proper airflow, which will keep your garden environment too moist and shady, which will be highly attractive to pests.
