West Nile Virus

According to Statista, In the United States, West Nile Virus is the most common mosquito-borne transmitted disease, followed by Malaria, Dengue, and Chikungunya. When a mosquito feeds on an infected bird, it can spread West Nile Virus to people and other animals through its bite. Most people who may be infected have mild to no symptoms. Symptoms which may develop are fever, headache, body ache, rash, and swollen lymph glands. Symptoms can last from a few days to a few weeks, but usually resolve on their own. However, if West Nile Virus enters the brain, it can be life threatening. This inflammation of the brain is called encephalitis. A physical exam, health history, and blood test can diagnose. Those with weakened immune systems are most at risk. The Centers for disease control is dedicated to providing information, symptoms, diagnosis, and much more. Since there are no specific vaccines or treatments for West Nile Virus, the best way to protect against mosquitoes is to prevent mosquito bites.

- Be sure windows have properly maintained screens
