They can. If the same food sources, warm exterior surfaces, and entry points remain, a home may experience boxelder bug activity repeatedly each fall.
Bugs tend to cluster in the same places year after year, but it’s not due to memory in the sense that you would normally use the term. Rather, the same conditions that drew them there last year are probably drawing them back this year. Add to that that many bugs release pheromones onto surfaces which are hard to wipe off and you have a recipe for boxelder bugs showing up on the same wall every year.
When fall arrives, boxelder bugs and other insects like stink bugs cluster on sun-warmed exterior walls. While there, they explore for cracks and crevices that will allow them to enter the home for possible overwintering shelter. The same walls get the same sun every year, so that’s why certain sides of homes, particularly those facing south or west, tend to have repeated problems.
The other thing to consider is that boxelder bugs need a way to get in. There are many exterior gaps they can use because they’re not that big, and gaps around windows, siding, soffits, vents, or utility penetrations can give bugs access to protected spaces.
Instead of treating each year as an unrelated event, look for where they gather outside and where they show up indoors. That can give you a hint as to which screens may be damaged or which seals need replacement. Then you can take action and help prevent next year’s problem.
