F.A.Q.

How can I keep bugs away during outdoor gatherings?

The most effective approach is a professional barrier treatment applied 24–48 hours before your event. Beyond that, reducing standing water, choosing the right time of day, and using fans can all help keep mosquitoes and other pests from overwhelming your guests.

You can plan every detail of an outdoor gathering. Everything from the food to the music to the lighting is ready to go. And here come the mosquitoes. Frustrating!

In Northwest Indiana, summer evenings, unfortunately, are prime mosquito feeding hours. This also just so happens to be when most backyard parties take place. The good news is that you have more control over this than you might think.

If you go with a professional barrier treatment, that’s the most reliable option. It targets the vegetation and surfaces where mosquitoes rest during the day. When scheduled one to two days before your event, it gives the product enough time to dry, bind to surfaces, and knock down mosquitoes. By the time guests arrive, the mosquito population in your yard will have already been significantly reduced.

If professional treatment isn’t an option, you can still take steps on your own to help reduce mosquito pressure. The biggest one, by far, is to remove standing water. Walk your property a week or two before the event and dump anything that holds water, whether it be a planter or a bucket, a toy or a tarp. Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap of water, so this makes a big difference.

Fans are also underrated when it comes to dealing with mosquitoes at events. Mosquitoes are weak fliers, and a few well-placed fans around a seating area can make it hard for them to land where people spend most of their time. It’s as low-tech as it gets, and it works.

What tends not to work well are citronella candles and tiki torches. These can deter mosquitoes by a couple of feet, but would require your guests to huddle right around the open flames, which makes it unrealistic for a big gathering.
