Fleas in Northeast Florida are not an uncommon sight. Why should we avoid fleas and their nasty bites?
Of course, flea bite avoidance will make our lives more comfortable, but there is a lingering concern about fleas in the United States in 2025. The issue is not just itchy, irritated skin. It’s plague. A word that brings us back to high school history class, bringing to mind tales from the Middle Ages, crowded European cities, and ancient pandemics. The reality, however, is that plague is not relegated to the past. While rare, cases still occur in the United States today, and the culprit remains the same as centuries ago – infected fleas.
Two confirmed cases of plague have made headlines recently. In the last few weeks, one person in AZ has succumbed to plague and a California resident is being treated for plague, believed to have been contracted while camping in Lake Tahoe – resulting from an infected flea bite.
Modern-Day Plague, How It’s Transmitted
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the United States has an average of seven confirmed cases of plague each year. While most of these cases occur in the western United States, plague remains a potential health threat, because the sources of the illness are plentiful here – even in Northeast Florida. Because plague is carried by fleas that bite infected animals, such as rabbits and squirrels, it is important that we work to defend our private outdoor spaces against both.
