Dengue Fever in Florida, 2025 Update

There has been a recent report of an uptick in dengue activity in Florida.
According to Florida Department of Health’s weekly reporting, August 24-30, 2025, we have recorded 181 travel-associated dengue cases – along with 19 locally acquired cases. So far, Brevard, Hillsborough, Miami-Dade, and Pasco counties have been ground zero for local transmission. This time of year usually sees weekly increases, so we can expect to see more cases reported as summer comes to a close.
Duval and St. Johns counties have recently been under mosquito-borne illness advisories, as well.
Which Mosquito is the Culprit for Dengue Fever?
Our friendly Aedes aegypti mosquito is the primary vector for dengue fever in Florida. However, Aedes albopictus can also transmit the illness. Aedes mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters but will also bite during the typical active times of other mosquito species – dusk to dawn.
Are There Specific Dengue Signs and Symptoms to Look Out For?
Dengue fever infections usually begin within three days to two weeks after a bite from an infected mosquito. The symptoms can be very similar to the flu. Sufferers might include pain behind the eyes and headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea and vomiting, and a high fever among others. Warning signs of severe dengue might include persistent vomiting, intense stomach pain, bleeding from the nose and gums, extreme restlessness or tiredness, and rapid breathing. These symptoms are typical of dengue infection, particularly after the fever breaks.
If you believe you might have been bitten by an infected mosquito, seek immediate medical attention.
