What Draws Stinging Insects to Lakefront Properties?

Lakefront property doesn’t, on its own, guarantee that you will be dealing with more wasps, hornets, or yellowjackets. What matters a lot more are the nesting and foraging opportunities your property provides. If your home gives them places to build nests and food to forage for, then it won’t be a big surprise if they come around to sting you for a sip of your soda in September.

That’s not to say you should accept this, though. Your deck, shed, and dock should be usable to you throughout the season. You shouldn’t have to think about what’s hiding in the trees or shrubs. You should be able to toss something in the trash without worrying about what’s about to fly out at you.

If you see one or two wasps passing through the yard, that could just mean foraging. But if you see repeated traffic, back and forth, to the same crack, hole, eave, or patch of ground, there may be a nest nearby. And if that’s the case, it helps to know what to do next.

Why Decks, Docks, Food, and Shelter Can Increase Wasp Activity

Wasps and hornets look for protected places where a nest can develop without constant disturbance. Around a lakefront home, that may include eaves, deck framing, sheds, sheltered trees or shrubs, wall gaps, and cavities in the ground.

Docks are particularly bad about this. They may have covered or sheltered areas, and often vegetation nearby. The water isn’t the main problem. The much bigger issue is having too many protected spaces clustered around outdoor areas where people spend the most time.

Food can draw stinging insects to those very same spaces. This is especially bad in late summer when yellowjackets and other wasps are more interested in human food and more defensive around established colonies. They want sweet foods and meats, which is why they tend to go after soda cans, fallen fruit, food scraps, grills, and trash.

This matters a lot when it comes to Lake Nebagamon pest control. A wasp investigating your drink is not the same as a steady stream of insects disappearing beneath the deck every few seconds.

How to Make Lakefront Outdoor Areas Less Attractive to Stinging Insects

The first thing to do is remove easy food sources. Keep drinks covered when possible, clean up spills, remove food scraps after outdoor meals, and keep garbage cans closed. It’s smart to clean grills too. When left dirty, food residue can attract wasps.

Once you’ve done that, turn your eye to the structures you use the most. Check eaves, deck railings, dock structures, sheds, and play equipment for repeated insect traffic. If you see a nest, don’t approach it. You can often reduce unnecessary hiding places around areas like these simply by removing clutter and trimming back vegetation. If there are obvious exterior gaps, seal inactive exterior gaps that could provide future nesting sites.

That said, if you find insects repeatedly entering the same cavity, give that area a wide berth. A concealed yellow jacket or wasp nest is not a good place for experimentation. Disturbing a nest can trigger defensive behavior from many insects at once. Professionalstinging-insect control can help here.

When to Call for Professional Stinging-Insect Control in Lake Nebagamon

There are four major reasons why you’d want to call for professional stinging insect control. The first is if there is a nest right next to a place you use every day like a door or deck. If you have a huge nest, that’s another reason. Wasp nests, when well-established, can be dangerous to remove on your own. If anyone in your home is allergic to wasps, that’s another reason to make the call. And last, if the wasps are coming from inside the walls, that’s not something you’ll be able to take down with wasp spray.

That is when professional identification and treatment can make sense. Mosquito Squad of Northwest Wisconsin provides pest control for wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, and other pests around Northwest Wisconsin properties.
