Why Brown Recluse Is Usually the Wrong Local Fear
The brown recluse can be a common concern for residents of Frederick, but their presence isn’t as common as one might think. The brown recluse is not native to Maryland, but can occasionally be transported into the area through shipping containers or transportation methods. Even still, their natural living environment is not conducive to Maryland weather, which reduces their ability to breed and spread within the area.
More common spiders include wolf spiders, black widows, and yellow sac spiders. Yellow sac spiders are known to enter homes within the fall season and reemerge into homes during the spring in search of nearby prey. Wolf spiders are active hunters which commonly enter homes through ground level areas and basements. These furry pests will hide throughout the day and emerge during the night to hunt for prey. While their bites are not commonly fatal, they can lead to localized swelling, redness, and intense pain.
Black widows are commonly found in quiet, outdoor areas such as water meters, utility boxes, and occasionally basement or attic spaces. Their bites can cause fever, nausea, muscle cramps, and abdominal pain. Seek medical attention if you believe you have been bitten by a black widow or a wolf spider.
What to Do When You Find a Spider Indoors
Spiders prefer areas where shelter, food, and undisturbed areas are commonly found. This can lead to increased spider webs and activity within attic spaces, basements, garages, and outdoor sheds. In these areas, it’s important to reduce clutter and remove boxes that have sat undisturbed for extended periods of time. This can create conditions where pest prey can nest and lead to spider hunting and web building. Remove leaf litter, brush, and firewood from near building structures to reduce transition zones between pest nesting areas and the gaps or cracks around foundational areas.
If you plan to remove undisturbed boxes, firewood, or other items, consider using protective gloves and long-sleeved clothing to reduce access to exposed skin. Shake out boxes, old boots, buckets, and other materials where spiders could possibly have created a nesting area or built webs. Conduct regular sweeps of the home to remove old and new spider webbing, and promptly vacuum and dispose of any egg sacs found around your Frederick property. Seal gaps, cracks, and crevices around worn door sweeps, external pipes, or areas where garage-door corners create structural gaps.
When Spider Activity Calls for Pest Control
The presence of spiders can be unnerving for residents of Frederick, but their presence doesn’t always warrant professional attention. If you’re noticing the signs of egg sacs, heightened spider activity, or webbing repeatedly reappearing, it could be beneficial to consult professional spider control providers.
