Ticks in the El Paso border region are getting a lot more attention in 2026.

And it’s not for nothing – there’s a serious reason why. This summer has brought about local news reports of a significant rise in cases of rickettsiosis across Chihuahua. Between January 1 and May 23 of this year, state health officials reported more than 60 confirmed cases, compared to 27 during the same period in 2025. Ciudad Juárez was among the communities most affected.

While this doesn’t mean that El Paso is experiencing the same rate of illness, it’s an important reminder for our border community. Tick awareness and tick bite prevention matter on both sides of the border.

The Topic of Ticks and Pets

Ticks and pets are a part of the conversation, because ticks require a host to survive. This means pets and other animals, including livestock and wildlife, all have the potential to play a role in moving ticks from one place to another.

Experts from Texas A&M have reminded residents that ticks can remain active year-round in Texas, with more species being active and higher activity during springtime and summer. If you love hiking, working around your home outside, or enjoying your yard, performing regular tick checks is important. And don’t forget to check your children and pets.

If a tick is attached to you, a family member, or pet, it should be removed promptly with tweezers using a steady hand and even pressure. After removal, keep an eye on the area of attachment to ensure no mouthparts were left under the skin, which can result in a secondary infection. Also, seek medical attention promptly if any unusual symptoms occur after a known tick bite.
