What Attracts Mosquitoes to Pacolet Yards?

Pacolet takes “small town U.S.A.” to the next level (in the best way). Actually, it’s one of the reasons you love it here. Everyone knows everyone, you wave at your neighbors, and the kids play outside until dark. You feel safe here.

But, there’s someone else playing outside after dark (besides your kids):

Mosquitoes.

And the difference between them and your kids is they don’t have a bedtime. Ever. So, when Pacolet provides the perfect conditions for them (especially in summer), they’ll always stay up late buzzing and biting.

So, what attracts mosquitoes to your yard in the first place? And most importantly, how do you reduce their activity?

Standing Water is Your Nemesis (and a Mosquito's Best Friend)

You’d be surprised to know that mosquitoes need just a smidgen of water to survive. Even a bottle cap’s worth is enough. It might not seem like it, but your property could be the perfect mosquito breeding ground.

Mosquitoes love:

  • Clogged gutters
  • Bird baths
  • Plant saucers
  • Pool covers
  • Buckets
  • Old tires
  • Low spots

Have any of these? Well, when water collects in these spots, mosquitoes will use that standing water to breed and support the next generation of buzzing and biting on your property. Which isn’t ideal.

So, while professional mosquito control will help reduce your mosquito populations, there are a few small tasks you can do before your technicians treat your yard. Start by following the 7 T’s of Mosquito Control to make your property less attractive to mosquitoes.

Shade Helps Mosquitoes Rest

Mosquitoes roast in the heat.

So, while you may have less mosquitoes buzzing around during the day, they aren’t gone. They’re just resting. And as soon as it cools down outside, they’ll be out for blood (literally).

Providing them with a shady, cool, and humid resting spot only fuels mosquito populations on your property. That’s why it can help to keep dense vegetation trimmed back away from your home.

Mosquitoes Are Attracted to Body Heat (i.e. You)

Mosquitoes are attracted to you specifically (and the rest of your family). Every time you exhale, you release carbon dioxide. And mosquitoes can detect it. Once they lock in, they follow your body heat and sweat. They buzz in, potentially carrying West Nile virus (which can have you down for the count).

And if you happen to wear dark clothing, that tends to draw mosquitoes in more. Dark clothing absorbs more heat and makes you more visible to mosquitoes than when you wear lighter colors. While this is a small detail, it makes a difference when you’re swatting away a swath of mosquitoes during a Pacolet summer.

Control Up to 85-90% of Mosquitoes on Your Property

Imagine having a protective shield around your property that repels mosquitoes. So much more outside enjoyment. And way less worrying about mosquito control options.

Having that mosquito shield is possible with our Barrier Treatment Plus. It's applied on a recurring 21-day cycle, targeting shaded areas, dense vegetation, and resting spots that mosquitoes rely on all season long.

And if you prefer a plant-based approach, we also offer a natural treatment option made from botanical oils, lasting up to 14 days per application. These are two separate products with different formulations, so you can choose the option that fits your preferences and your yard.

Either way, you shouldn't have to plan your summer around those pesky mosquitoes. With the right treatment in place, you'll get back the evenings on the porch, the backyard cookouts, and the kids playing outside until dark.
