F.A.Q.

Why does my yard still have mosquitoes when I don't have standing water?

Mosquitoes can fly in from neighboring properties, breed in water sources you haven't noticed, and rest in your yard's vegetation even if they didn't breed there.

You did the right thing as far as you can tell. You dumped the birdbath, flipped the wheelbarrow, and cleaned the gutters. So you might wonder: “what are the mosquitoes still doing here?”

It’s incredibly frustrating. That’s why it’s important to remember that mosquitoes are decent at flying. Most can travel up to a quarter mile or more from their breeding site. And some can cover several miles at a time. Even if your property has no standing water, a neighbor’s clogged gutter or a retention pond down the street could be producing mosquitoes that end up in your yard by evening.

The second factor is hidden water. Mosquitoes don’t need a pond to breed. They need only a bottle cap’s worth of stagnant water sitting undisturbed for about a week. That could mean a saucer under a potted plant or a tarp draped over firewood with a small sag that holds rainwater. Or it could even be the corrugated pipe at the end of your downspout. These are all easy to miss in a quick walkthrough and any one of them can produce hundreds of mosquitoes per breeding cycle.

There’s also the issue of habitat. Even mosquitoes that didn’t breed on your property will rest there if the conditions are right. Dense shrubs, tall grass, ground cover, shaded areas under decks, and thick landscaping along fence lines are all they need for cool, humid daytime shelter. A yard with a great resting habitat can feel like a mosquito property even if they’re not breeding there.
