F.A.Q.

Why are mosquitoes so bad at dusk?

Dusk is the perfect time for mosquitoes to find a blood meal because the wind dies down, humidity rises, UV light fades, and temperatures cool.

It’s not your imagination. Mosquitoes really do tend to pick up around sunset. That narrow window between late afternoon and dark is when most mosquito species hit peak activity. And if you’re trying to enjoy an evening outdoors, it can feel like the yard goes from pleasant to unbearable in minutes.

Mosquitoes are sensitive to environmental conditions. Direct sunlight and wind make it harder for them to fly and locate hosts. During the middle of the day, UV light can dehydrate and damage them. So most species rest instead, finding shaded and humid spots like dense vegetation, under decks, and leaf litter.

As the sun sinks in the sky, conditions shift in their favor. Wind speeds typically decrease at dusk, which makes flying easier for an insect that weighs about 2.5 milligrams. Humidity rises as air cools, which benefits their thin exoskeletons. And the carbon dioxide plumes you exhale become easier for them to track in still air.

Temperature is another big factor, too, as mosquitoes are most active between 60 and 80 degrees. In Wisconsin summers, that sweet spot tends to line up with dusk and early evening. It also helps that predators like dragonflies and birds tend to be less active around this time.

If you are a homeowner who simply wants to enjoy their yard during the evening hours,Mosquito Squad of Northeast Wisconsin can help. This is thanks to barrier treatments that help reduce mosquito populations by up to 85-90%. These treatments target the shaded resting areas where mosquitoes hide during the day, so populations are reduced before dusk even arrives. Each application continues working for up to 21 days.
