F.A.Q.

Do cooler temperatures force mice into homes?

Cooler weather can push mice to seek protected shelter indoors, but they still need an opening that gives them access.

When temperatures fall across Northeast Wisconsin, rodents look for more suitable climates. Unfortunately, for a lot of homeowners around here, that means your house, garage, or shed. Inside, mice have something that they can’t have outdoors: a stable temperature. And if they have nearby sources of food and nesting material, they consider that to be even better.

Of course, not even the bitterest of Wisconsin winters can make mice phase through walls. They have to find openings like those around exterior doors and vents. Cracks around foundations and gaps around utility lines, pipes, and cables work too. Once a mouse finds an opening, they can then slip inside. If they find birdseed, pet food, loose items in the pantry, or particularly delicious trash, they can stay around for a while.

Fall rodent problems have as much to do with the structure as they do with the weather. Cooler temperatures make indoor shelters more attractive. But there still have to be ways inside, which is where you can take action to help prevent them from getting in.

Walk around the exterior of your home in the fall and look for gaps, damaged screens, worn door sweeps, and places where utilities enter the building. Garages deserve additional attention here because gaps around garage doors can provide entry points. If you have items like pet food or birdseed, store them in heavy plastic or metal containers so your garage is less attractive to rodents that manage to get inside.

Indoors, watch for evidence such as droppings, gnaw marks, shredded nesting material, damaged food packaging, or recurring scratching noises. A single sighting won’t tell you how rodents are getting in. Patterns often can, though.
