Termite Control

Termite Control in Knoxville

Termite damage doesn't show up until it's already serious. Most Knoxville homeowners don't realize colonies have been active for months before they see the first swarmer or notice wood that sounds hollow when tapped. Unlike mosquitoes or ticks that show up fast and make themselves known, termites feed inside walls, under floors, and in crawl spaces where there's no way to see what's happening until the structure starts failing.

Knoxville sits in ridge-and-valley terrain that traps moisture differently than flatter areas. Older neighborhoods in Concord and Karns were built before modern moisture barriers became standard. Crawl spaces in these areas stay damp longer, and that's exactly what subterranean termites need to keep colonies active through winter. Oak Ridge properties with wooded lots and heavy canopy cover see less direct sun, which means soil around foundations doesn't dry out the way it does in open subdivisions. If your home was built before 1990 and you've never had a termite inspection, you're gambling.

TERMITE CONTROL SERVICES

What we provide:

  • Termite Inspections - Full assessment of foundation, crawl space, attic, and exterior to identify active colonies and vulnerable areas
  • Termite Treatment - Soil barrier applications or localized wood treatment based on species and infestation extent
  • Monitoring Programs - Scheduled follow-ups to track new activity and verify treatment effectiveness
  • Identification & Consultation - We tell you exactly what you're dealing with and what your options are

WHY TERMITE CONTROL MATTERS IN KNOXVILLE

Termites don't take seasons off. A colony with 300,000 termites can consume about a foot of 2x4 lumber in six months. That's not speculation. That's what happens when subterranean termites find consistent moisture and unprotected wood.

Early detection stops expensive repairs. If you catch termites during an inspection before they've compromised load-bearing structures, treatment is straightforward and costs stay manageable. If you wait until floors sag or door frames warp, you're looking at structural work on top of termite treatment.

Knoxville's real estate market moves fast, and termite history shows up in inspections. Buyers walk when they see active infestations or evidence of old damage without documentation of treatment. Sellers who've kept up with annual inspections close faster and don't lose negotiating leverage over pest issues that could've been handled years earlier.

HOW TERMITE CONTROL WORKS

Inspection

Inspections start at the foundation and work up. We check exterior walls for mud tubes, examine crawl spaces for moisture and wood-to-soil contact, inspect attics for drywood termite frass, and look at sill plates where the foundation meets wood framing.

What we're checking:

  • Mud tubes (subterranean termites build these to travel between soil and wood)
  • Discarded wings near windows or doors (swarmers shed wings after mating flights)
  • Hollow-sounding wood (termites eat from the inside out, leaving a thin shell)
  • Moisture accumulation in crawl spaces or around foundations
  • Wood debris, mulch, or landscaping material touching siding
  • Foundation cracks that give termites direct access

Homes in Concord and Karns built in the 70s and 80s often have stone foundations with gaps that weren't properly sealed. Those gaps let termites in without needing to build mud tubes up exterior walls. Oak Ridge properties near wooded areas deal with higher termite pressure because mature trees drop branches and create ground contact points. We know where to look based on what part of Knoxville you're in. Read more about identifying termite infestations early.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on termite species and where they're feeding.

Subterranean Termites - These are the ones causing most of the damage in Knoxville. Treatment involves applying liquid termiticide to soil around the foundation perimeter and under the slab if accessible. The termiticide creates a treated zone. Termites that contact it die before reaching wood. Modern termiticides last 5+ years in soil and don't wash out with normal rainfall.

Drywood Termites - Less common here but still present. These termites infest dry wood without needing soil contact. Treatment targets the infested wood directly, either through localized injection or fumigation if the infestation is widespread.

We're not trying to kill every termite in the area. We're creating a protective barrier around your home so termites can't access the structure.

Monitoring

Termite control isn't one-and-done. Colonies reproduce every spring. Swarmers establish new colonies within a few hundred feet of the parent colony. Monitoring appointments let us check bait stations, inspect for new mud tubes, and verify the soil barrier is still intact.

If we find new activity during monitoring, we address it before it becomes structural damage.

WHEN TO SCHEDULE TERMITE CONTROL

Before Swarm Season Starts - Knoxville's termite swarm season runs late March through May, peaking in April when temperatures hit the mid-70s after rain. Swarmers are the most visible sign of termite activity, but by the time you see them, colonies have been established for a while. Schedule inspections in February or early March to get ahead of it.

If You See These Signs - Don't wait. Call immediately:

  • Winged insects indoors (especially near windows or lights)
  • Piles of discarded wings on windowsills or porches
  • Mud tubes on foundation walls or in crawl spaces
  • Wood that sounds hollow or feels soft when pressed
  • Paint bubbling on trim with no water damage
  • Tiny holes in drywall or wood paneling
  • Small piles of what looks like sawdust near baseboards

Termites and ants get confused all the time. If you're not sure what you're looking at, check this guide on termites vs ants.

Annual Inspections Make Sense If:

  • Your home is older than 10 years
  • You're in Concord, Karns, or Oak Ridge where termite pressure is consistent
  • Your property has wooded areas, heavy tree cover, or sits near a creek
  • You've had drainage issues, crawl space moisture, or foundation cracks
  • Previous owners dealt with termites and you want to verify treatment is still effective

Inspections cost less than repairs. Handle it before damage happens.
