F.A.Q.

Do water features in my yard attract mosquitoes?

It depends on whether the water is moving or still. Standing water features like birdbaths, decorative ponds without circulation, and unused fountains are prime mosquito breeding sites. Moving water features with pumps and aeration are much less attractive to mosquitoes.

You might have invested in a beautiful backyard pond or fountain recently. But with mosquito season approaching, you might now be worried it’s going to make your mosquito problem worse.

That’s a real concern. But the good news is that the answer isn't always "rip it out." It often comes down to how the feature is maintained.

Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in or near standing water. The larvae develop entirely in water, and they need calm conditions to survive. A birdbath that sits undisturbed for a week is a good place to lay eggs. So is a decorative pond with no pump or a rain barrel without a screen.

The trouble spots are the features people forget about. That could mean a birdbath that doesn’t get refreshed weekly or a decorative pot with a few inches of rainwater sitting in the bottom. Maybe a kiddie pool that stays filled between uses. These are all sources that mosquitoes can use to breed.

The fix for most of these is simple. Change birdbath water at least once a week, ideally every few days. Keep pumps running in ponds and fountains. Screen rain barrels. Dump any container that collects water and isn't in active use. When that’s not possible, Bti dunks are a biological larvicide that can be used to control mosquitoes without harming fish, pets, or wildlife.

Fish make a difference too. Ponds stocked with goldfish, koi, or mosquitofish (Gambusia) benefit from a natural predator that feeds on mosquito larvae. So a healthy fish population can keep a well-maintained pond mosquito-free even without chemicals.
