Ants go after homes that provide food, moisture, and accessible entry points. They send scouts to find resources, and once a scout finds a reliable source of food or water inside your home, it lays a chemical trail that brings the rest of the colony.
If you find ants on your counter, it didn’t happen suddenly. The ants have been laying groundwork for a while and you are seeing the visible signs of much more work.
Food is the most common attractant for ants. That includes crumbs on countertops, spills that were not wiped up completely, and pet food left in a bowl overnight. Any of these can sustain a foraging trail indefinitely. They’re attracted to sugars and proteins. Even if you keep a house that appears spotless, it takes very little for ants to get in. Crumbs in the toaster are sometimes all they need.
Moisture is the second factor, and it's the one people overlook most. Leaky pipes under sinks, condensation around windows, dripping faucets, and damp areas in basements all attract ants that need water. Carpenter ants may be the worst of the bunch because they seek out wood that has been softened by water damage so they can bore cavities into it and create nesting sites at the cost of property damage for you.
Ants also need a way to enter the home. Because ants are so small, they have no shortage of options and they can often slip through the gaps around utility pipes or cracks in the foundation, as well as more obvious problems like loose seals on doors and windows. Once a trail is established through one of these entry points, ants will use it over and over again until the trail is broken.
To deal with ants, you have to handle all these problems at once. Remove food sources and fix moisture problems. Then seal the gaps they use to get inside.
